How do you know when the person who can make the difference . . . is you?

Olive is excited to start sixth grade: new teachers, new experiences,
and a field trip to the big city with her best buds!

But when Olive finds out that a school policy is keeping some kids from going on the trip, she decides to act. She's prepared to do whatever it takes to be heard—even if it means running against Trent and Sawyer, two of her closest friends, in the student council election! With intense campaign competition and emotions running high, can Olive make a big change
and keep her friends?

New York Times bestselling author-illustrator Kayla Miller crafts a genuine and inspiring story about evolving friendships, supportive family, and finding out that you—yes, you—have the power to make a difference.

Great Graphic Novel About Activism

Great Graphic Novel About Activism
My nine-year-old daughter started on this author with "Camp," and has moved through the series. Act might be my favorite. It's a great story about activism. The main character learns her school's field trip policy excludes some students. It has great back matter about the role of activism in things like women's rights.

My daughter liked this book and she said it was interesting. She read it in one day. SPOILER ALERT: She liked that at the end Olive didn't win the election, but her friends who did win, gave her their spot, because all they wanted was pudding.

Kayla Miller’s “Click” series is popular with all my middle grade girls, those who predominantly read from the graphic novel section as well as the ones who tend to select books in a more traditional format. “Act” continues the series with Olive discovering that several classmates were required to stay at school instead of attending a play with the others simply because they could not afford to pay. Encouraged by her aunt and friend Ava to run for one of the two student council representative positions, Olive wants to change not only the school’s field trip policy but several other issues that concern her classmates including dress code and homework policies. But, of course, the road to school government is not all smooth and Miller includes other situations common to middle school students, such as first crushes and communication fails. Excellent choice for readers in grades 4-7 which no profanity, sexual content, or violence present.

A 2021-2022 Texas Bluebonnet Award nominee.

Such a great graphic novel! My 7 & 9 year olds loved it! So did I. The reader learns about democracy, the importance of trying to make things better for others, mending friendships, and persisting. It's a great read. Highly recommend. And, there's a bonus mint chocolate chip recipe in the back:)

I can't wait to read Camp & Click, by the same author.

I will admit this one didn’t grab me as much. Would pudding really win out over someone who people were already going to for help. It was an interesting look into social rifts over politics and seeing the characters grow further was great. Just harder to keep focused on as there wasn’t as much of the fun here.

Loved this! Olive is a brilliant main character - when she sees an injustice at school, she decides to use the opportunity to run for class representative to do something about it. This is gorgeously political without being too much. There’s brilliant messages about friendship, injustices and empathy.
