All-Star Batman (2016-2017) Vol. 2: Ends of the Earth (All-Star Batman (2016-)) Kindle & comiXology

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 340 ratings

New York Times best-selling writer Scott Snyder, author of such instant-classic BATMAN graphic novels as THE COURT OF OWLS, DEATH OF THE FAMILY and ENDGAME, joins forces with an all-star lineup of comics’ top artists to bring the madness and menace of some of the Dark Knight’s greatest villains into the modern era with ALL-STAR BATMAN VOL. 2: ENDS OF THE EARTH.

Join Snyder and his frequent collaborator Jock (BATMAN: THE BLACK MIRROR) as they plunge into the icy heart of darkness with Mr. Freeze. Eat the forbidden fruit offered by the sinister and seductive Poison Ivy in a tale illustrated by Tula Lotay (BODIES). Take a journey to the far side of sanity with the Mad Hatter through art by comics superstar Giuseppe Camuncoli (BATMAN: EUROPA). Then, finally, the demonic mind behind these master criminals’ apocalyptic ambitions is revealed...

He is Gotham City’s guardian. He is the Justice League’s Dark Knight. He is Batman, one of the most iconic characters in history. But without his equally classic foes, his legend would be incomplete.

ALL-STAR BATMAN VOL. 2: ENDS OF THE EARTH (Rebirth) is Batman at his best—and his villains at their worst! Collects issues #6-9 of the ongoing series, including the conclusion to “The Cursed Wheel” drawn by Francesco Francavilla (BATMAN: THE BLACK MIRROR).

Review

"A damn fun--and beautiful--ride." --PASTE MAGAZINE

"This comic is  awesome. There was always an element of bombastic spectacle to balance the strong horror elements in BATMAN, but ALL-STAR BATMAN sees Snyder doubling down on explosive, dynamic action, brought to the page with incredible energy by penciler John Romita Jr., inker Danny Miki, and colorist Dean White." --A.V. CLUB/THE ONION

"Snyder and Romita have produced a riveting first issue and given us, here, at the so-called end of times, the Batman we so desperately need." --POPMATTERS

"An energetic set-up aimed right at the thematic allure that Two-Face has had over the decades." --IO9

"Romita's pages deliver a nonstop stream of superhero carnage." --IGN

"Entertaining. Art is eye-pleasing and easy to read." --NERDIST

"...there's a gritty gutsiness to [ALL-STAR BATMAN]." --Newsarama

I write comic books! Growing up, I always wanted to write comics, but I ended up trying my hand at fiction first. I got my MFA from Columbia University, published a book of short stories with The Dial Press in 2006 called Voodoo Heart, then finally broke into comics in 2009 and haven't looked back since. I've worked extensively for DC Comics, writing such titles as Batman, Detective Comics, Justice League, the comic event books DC Dark Knights Metal and Death Metal, and Swamp Thing, among others. I've also created a number of series with some great co-creators and partners -- books like We Have Demons, Clear, Night of the Ghoul, Nocterra, American Vampire, Wytches, the Wake, AD: After Death, and more... I live in NY with my wife, Jeanie and our three boys. I am also a big fan of Elvis Presley.

There is simply one word to describe this book: fun. The plot twists are jaw dropping, the characters are gripping, and the action doesn’t stop. You’re going on an over-the-top ride whether you like it or not.

Also, Snyder ties up some of the loose ends that he had in his New 52 run.

Scott Snyder writes a compelling narrative, although at times it gets a bit too caught up in being artsy and is therein unclear. Over all a worthy read for Batman fans.

Scott snyder created a fantastic detective tale with a great pace and beautiful art to accompany the ride. Highly recommend!

That's the best I could come up with is I don't know, I didn't really care for the story, I'm not a big fan of Duke to start with and it just was kinda wack, I don't know usually Snyder and all the stuff batman wise he's done even the weird stuff I've liked but this one was just dumb and the volume before it was pretty good with Two-Face. Just didn't seem, TO ME, to make much sense and just like why? I mean I know why but I just have read so many Batman comics, graphic novels, and even the ones I didn't love, were still good and made sense but again TO ME this was just stupid and a waste of time, AGAIN JUST MY PERSONAL OPINION IM NOT SAYING IM RIGHT. Just MY thoughts. Be your own judge and see for yourself cause if you go by reviews only, your gonna see alot or read alot of things that people said were great that suck and that people said sucked and were great so I always advocate that if it interests you then read it or see it and that's the only way you'll know what YOU think, I mean that's the point right ? Not to validate or hate on what others think?

Good take on a classic character
Reviewed in the United States on September 12, 2017
The more I read his books, the bigger fan I am of Scott Snyder. With All-Star Batman Vol. 2: Ends of the Earth, Snyder once again has written a great Batman story (although according to the narration, "This is not a Batman story). With a rotating cast of artists, Snyder tells a tale of ecological destruction featuring four different villains.

The first three stories, which are connected but self-contained, star Mr. Freeze, Poison Ivy, and Mad Hatter. Batman is tasked with dealing with each of them and some sort of ecological disaster. By the time the fourth chapter rolls around, Snyder has set the table perfectly for his surprising conclusion. This book has appearances by the mysterious Blackhawk group, as well.

My favorite part of this collection is the Mad Hatter story. I always thought Jervis Tetch was sort of corny as a villain, and at his best he was a creeper. Snyder, however, really gave him a serious and threatening turn as a villain, making him a legitamate rogue for Batman.

In addition to the main story, Snyder continued his run of back up features tracing the training of Batman's new partner, Duke Thomas. Intertwined with a threat from the Riddler, Duke struggles to find his place in the Bat-family. It's a neat way to do a Year One type story for Duke without having it be the main storyline.

I highly recommend All-Star Batman Vol. 2: Ends of the Earth by Scott Snyder. He has got a great feel for Batman and he continually adds to his reputation as one of the best at relating the adventures of the Dark Knight. If you like Batman, you should definitely pick this up, and it functions as a jumping on point for new readers as well.

I received a preview copy of this book from DC Comics and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Amazon screwed me last time I wrote a long review for this by running into a computing error. I lost all my review.

This book is solid. Great first issue with Mr. Freeze. Great issue with Mad Hatter. Glad to see the use of a major DC villain as the main antagonist. Good all around.

Mr. Snyder does it again. This continuation from Volume 1 doesn't miss a step. The action keeps coming. Looking forward to Volume 3.

2.0 out of 5 stars Furchtbares Gekrakel, doofe Story
Reviewed in Germany on April 10, 2023
