Aquaman #2 (8.5/10) "Great!"
This is not your daddy's "Super Friends'" cheesy, weirdo Aquaman. This Aquaman is a king and Abnett masterfully shows that Aquaman is commanding, cool-headed, and resolute through his actions and gestures (Eaton's pencils don't hurt either). Could a good king even persuade his enemies to choose a peaceful compromise? Abnett pushes this notion even further in this book.
Although last issue's penciler Brad Walker is sorely missed as you can tell the difference between Walker and Eaton's artwork. Walker's rendition of each character's eyes is amazing and even if a character was not moving, Walker could tell a story just with a character's eyes. Still Eaton does an admirable job.
This is a brutal fight between Black Manta and Aquaman, and it doesn't just feel like a fight with cool artwork and poses. Eaton's artwork is very deliberate and unshowy and really shows that this is not meant to be a pretty fight, but a fight between two men that realize the fight can only end one way. Each punch carries weight, each strike carries deliberate hate, and each attack carries exhaustive emotional anger and resolution.
Pros:
-The action feels weighty. Each punch actually feels realistic and that it matters.
-Abnett continues his strong characterization of Aquaman and the sensitive politics between Atlantis and the land dwellers.
Cons:
-Walker's pencil work is sorely missed.
-The resolution between Black Manta and Aquaman may leave readers puzzled.
