Editorial Reviews

Review

"If someone asked me to suggest one collection to showcase Hawkeye, andhis relationship with Mockingbird, this is the one I'd recommend. Thisis the one that collects together the best issues, and you'll come out of it understanding Hawkeye as a character, and the Hawkeye/Mockingbirddynamic. There's no filler here!" -- Decanus

I always liked the 1980s Hawkeye, but wish we had more Hawkeye stories in this book, and not so much Mockingbird.

Despite his appearance in the "Avengers" movie, Hawkeye has always been one of the underutilized characters in the Marvel rotation. A hero without any powers of his own, Hawkeye's own hard work, determination and often pluck guide him in his adventures. Add Hawkeyes's own insecurities, often ill-timed humor and even occasionally obnoxious personality, and the result is a memorable hero. The focus of this book is author and penciler Mark Gruenwald's mini-series from 1983 which introduces our hero to Mockingbird, the heroine who ends up as his love interest. It's an exciting tale that reveals character and shapes the story of both Hawkeye and Mockingbird. The other stories included in this collection simply are not as strong. Hawkeye's debut as a minor Iron Man villain in a "Tales of Suspense" comic from 1964 is interesting but simply does not hold up well after almost 50 years. A "Marvel Super Action" comic featuring Bobbi Morse before she becomes Mockingbird from 1976 shows promise but the black and white format doesn't help. An "Avengers" comic from 1979 with a focus on Hawkeye and a "Marvel Team Up" from 1980 featuring Spider-Man and Mockingbird do little to add to the collection.

This book basically rests on Gruenwald's four issue mini-series. Fans of Hawkeye should like it though he generally does better with an ensemble cast around him than on his own. Gruenwald is a much better writer than penciler in this series and the art simply doesn't stand out. Still, despite the often superfluous comics included at the end, it's a fun collection and the main story makes the book above average. Recommended to Marvel fans in general and Hawkeye fans in particular.

skye man
5.0 out of 5 stars Better title would be Hawkeye and Mockingbird
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 7, 2020
Exactly as described classic tales covering the Avenging Archer and Mockingbird.

I definitely enjoyed the Hawkeye mini series the most as it gives me what I wanted to see, Clint being awesome with his bow and trick arrows taking on colourful villains and proving why he's a mainstay of the Avengers.

Second is the very first appearance of Hawkeye as a foe of Iron Man which is pretty good, showing how much of threat he can be with his bow and his first meeting with Black Widow.

The third is an Avengers story I've read before where Hawkeye takes centre stage against X-Men foe Deathbird. Though I imagine a lot of the stuff outside of that would require knowing about the team's status quo at the time or you'd be rather confused.

Next are surprisingly, Mockingbird focused stories. Her first appearance in her original Huntress persona. And finally a good old fashioned team up with Spider-Man against some corrupt SHIELD personal.

All good stories in their own rights that I would recommend, though I feel the Avengers you'd need more context for stuff outside of the Deathbird otherwise it'd be a bit confusing.
