Overlaps the collected hard cover Infinity but worth it for the missing pieces of the story and great artwork.

Despite having a title such as Prelude to Infinity, Hickman's third volume of Avengers is mostly just a continuation of the Builder story arc from the first two volumes. Starbrand and Nightmask continue to grow in strength and power and realize they need to step up their protection of their world now that Ex Nihilo's system is "broken." Likewise, AIM continues to experiment with the secret final evolution site that they have secured without the Avengers' knowledge. A lot of this book is based on the "self sufficiency" site located in the Savage Lands where the inhabitants have been reborn as Zebra-striped children. Thor and Hyperion decide to take it upon themselves to help raise and protect these new children and teach them how to survive on Earth despite the children being a next step of evolution (they don't need to eat or sleep or breathe like normal humans and thus may not want for anything). While trying to instruct these kids, the High Evolutionary steps in to use these new beings for his own plans and hopes to resurrect a Terminus robot with them. The book's standout is Hyperion who gets a lot of much needed characterization here as he becomes the surrogate father figure for the children. When the High Evolutionary attacks Hyperion jumps up to defend his "kids" and the story goes a long way to fleshing out this character and making him less of a cheap Marvel knockoff of Superman. It also helps to remember while reading this book that Spiderman is currently in the midst of his Superior Spiderman arc and is possessed by Dr. Octopus (hence why he is such a jerk the whole time).

The set-up to Infinity continues here and while there are some good character bits, particularly with Thor and Hyperion, it’s not enough to justify another several issues of setting the table. I didn’t particularly think that Hickman spent enough time on introducing all of these new characters either. They’re all sort of thrown into the mix. I realize that part of this is Hickman’s style, but whereas in Hickman’s FF I always felt he had a good pace going, his Avengers thus far has seemed like a very long introduction to the story he really wants to tell. We’ll see if it’s worth it.

Hickman's writing is really interesting; I really can't wait to find out where this is going! And the art is pretty wonderful too. Recommended.

Wow. That's all I can say. I was sad to see him leave The Fantastic Four but what he's done with the Avengers is just...wow.

Lovely storyline. Headed for no. 4. It just keeps going. The creativity in the creation links and history, tell me more.

There may be spoilers ahead...

Jonathan Hickman continues to weave his magic and connect some of the dots that began in Avengers Volume 1 in this third volume of his work since he took the helm following the Marvel NOW! commencement.

Previously we discovered that extra-terrestrial beings were taking an interest in Planet Earth (not for the first time), but these fellas actually have a big part to play in creating worlds, and life on worlds.

After volumes 1 and 2, some of that new life is now under the protection of the Avengers. Out in the Savage Land, these alien children are taught various moral lessons by Spiderman, Thor, Hawkeye, Spiderwoman and Hyperion, but when the children are taken from them, our heroes must face the threats from the High Evolutionary whilst attempting to rescue their new charges.

Then we discover the purpose of the "Origin Bombs" that were sent to Earth in Volume 1, as signals are being sent into space that disrupts 90% of the world's electrical grids. Whilst we see the Avengers dealing with various catastrophes and threats around the world caused by these signals, A.I.M. become involved, harbouring a threat of their own, but not before that threat wipes the floor with some of the Avengers team.

S.H.I.E.L.D., S.W.O.R.D., A.I.M., the Avengers, Builders, Creators, - all are involved as the pieces start to come together as the slightly confusing storyline that began in issue 1 starts to make sense.

And once those signals are received...

Jonathan Hickman's story has been brewing slowly but has been building momentum as the chess pieces move around ready for this year's big event; INFINITY. All my favourite Avengers are contained here; with a big roster that includes some new faces that I'm beginning to like. Hickman has clearly known from issue 1 what will happen when it's all over, but he's been keeping the reader (or maybe just me) puzzled for the better part of 12 issues.

Now I'm starting to enjoy it more. I gave volumes 1 and 2, 3 stars each. I'm going up to 4 for Volume 3, mostly because he's finally given me the connection I needed in the earlier volumes, but also because there's some great scenes contained here; the moral lessons for the alien children were both funny and touching at the same time, the Avengers taking a beating, and the schemes of A.I.M. were particular highlights for me.

The artwork and colouring is spectacular throughout, with artist duties being split between Mike Deodato, Stefano Caselli, Marco Rudy and Marco Checchetto.

Volumes 1 and 2 were slow burners. Now we're picking up pace and I thoroughly look forward to what comes next...INFINITY.

1.0 out of 5 stars Terrible quality of product

I purchased this product as part of an ongoing collection along with another issue. When I received the book it was in extremely poor condition with significant bends to the pages and a large amount of damage to the binder of the book. I paid full price and expected a product which would be kept in a good condition as this is what I paid for. Receiving this product in its condition has made me rethink purchasing any further products from Amazon.

Hickman is quickly becoming one of my favorite writers. It is very intelligent & clean.
I devoured the first two books as well as this one. Must buy if you like the Avengers.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Small (and slightly disappointing) part of a larger scheme.

Too many characters, some of whom are invented by Hickman especially for this arc. However, the art is nice and the plot is beginning to be interesting. Lacks humour and too many characters for much interaction.
