, this reboot seeks to bring Barbarella to new life. The first story arc features B as interstellar trouble-shooter - but this time, intra-stellar. Rapacious profiteers seek to strip the star of valuable resources. To them, the peaceful and pastoral people living within the sun constitute a pest eradication issue, with which B strenuously disagrees. In the end, she saves the gentle star-folk at great risk to herself - and using a plot device you could never have seen coming. The second story in this pair calls Bond movies to mind, in which the villain concocts an elaborate mechanism for killing Our Hero. And, Bond-like, the mechanism's complexity brings its failure, due again to some trick that B basically pulled out of nowhere. Exciting and neatly drawn, each story is self-contained, with little connection to past or future.
B does present her sensual side a bit, but without the innocent abandon of her 1960s incarnation - also without the surreal goofiness that contemporary readers might not appreciate. In other words, Barbarella II seems a fair enough action hero. Still, even the finer finish of the artwork doesn't make up for lacking what made version 1.0 so special.
