This is the fourth volume in Hope Larson's Batgirl run, one which has focused not only on crime-fighting, but also community spirit - what I've liked most about Larson's stories is that Barbara Gordon gives just as much to the suburb of Burnside as her civilian self than she does as a vigilante. In this, she's assisted by a group of friends who also contribute to society in meaningful ways, as well as enriching Barbara's day-to-day life. I didn't realize that members of the Batfamily could be this emotionally stable!

"Strange Loop" isn't my favourite collection, simply because it's made up of seven shorter stories, which inevitably don't have the same level of depth and detail that longer plots can manage. Still, there's some fun stuff here...

"White Elephant" involves a Christmas attack by Harlequin who targets a spoiled business-owner (basically a Scrooge stand-in), leading to a race for Batgirl and her friends to figure out her "true meaning of Christmas" riddle before party guests succumb to her toxins.

"Cold Snap" involves a strange shift in the weather that leads to Burnside being covered in unseasonal snow. Batgirl is suspicious, especially when the Penguin offers his services in clearing the roads, and sees the return of a villain introduced earlier in the series (volume two to be exact).

"Father Knows Best" sees Batgirl team up with her father (not that he knows it) to solve a mystery involving disappearing women and sentient face-cream, while "Strange Loop" has her stop a domestic incidence, only to find herself meeting friends and acquaintences from her trip to Asia. She's happy to see them, but she can't shake the feeling that something is off. Without giving anything away, the twist is based on a fun premise (one that's incredibly prevalent in Batfamily stories) though one that's played out better in the past.

"Choices" is a bittersweet look at Batgirl trying to talk a victimized young man out of making a vengeful mistake, while "The Reason" has her mourning for a man whose life she saved months ago, only for him to eventually die at the Joker's hands.

Finally, "March Madness" sees Batgirl go up against one of the Mad Hatter's cohorts, March Harriet, who has her own sad backstory to share.

Although I prefer a longer, more complex level of plotting, these stories are amusing enough on their own, with great art and colour. It's nice to get a bit of retrospection from Barbara, as there's a lot of time given over to her redefining her life and goals, and she doesn't always get things right. As someone who doesn't read a lot of comics, these provided some distraction on a rainy day.

ot of short stories in this one. Overall thoughts:

White Elephant: At a party, Harley Quinn poisons a sleezy businessman, Batgirl and a couple of Barabra Gordon's friends try to follow the trail to the antitdote and prove their own moral superiority.

Cold Snap: There's a sudden Blizard but Penguin's to the rescue. However, Batgirl senses something wrong. A callback to Volume 2. Overall, not bad but not remarkable either.

Father Knows Best: A sludge monster is coming out of the sewer to attack people in Burnside. There's a witness that gives them a clue and it leads to a team-up between Batgirl and her father (who doesn't know her identity.) Overall, a nice story with them interacting.

Strange Loop: Final written by Hope Larson. Barbara stops a woman's abusive ex, but finds old friends from her trip to Asia showing up in Volume 1 and then she gets a shocking reveal at the end of the first of the two issue story. This isn't ad, but I've seen better books using a similar plot device.

Choices: Batgirl is concerned about a young man and tries to stop him going down the wrong path. It shows her earnestness and personality which is good. Would like a it more reaction to the ending.

The Reason: A story of two halves. Batgirl deals with the death of a man in Batman: The Wedding that she'd saved in an off-panel story. She meets with the man's mother who's kind and conforming. It's a good and moving idea for a story. Unfortunately, we don't have enough for a full issue, so in the second half, Barbara rents a hotel room and meets Dick Grayson and spends the rest of the book philosophizing in her underwear until the issue ends.

Overall, while the smaller stories provided a chance to shine with some good quick stories like happened in Volume 3, but there weren't any great stories. The best stories in her were pretty good, leading to an overall mediocre feel, which has been true of every volume of this book in Rebirth except for Volume 3. Here's hoping the new writer produces something better in Volume 5.

Another terrible Batgirl comic. The hits just keep on coming. The author has not improved at all and the political bias has somehow gotten even worse. During the first issue a man is demonized because he doesn’t support the same social justice issues that Batgirl does. He is treated like scum and the other characters call him tons of mean names because they disagree with his opinions. The other stories are filled with even more political garbage. Do not read this book. Do not buy this book. Avoid this author.

The first half is this cool story involving the Penguin but it's a tad too predictable and run of the mill for me. The next issue is a one-shot involving Batgirl and Gordon teaming up on a case and Barbara deals with not only her dad not knowing of her secret identity but also realizing how they've drifted apart as of late due. And the last set is a two-parter where once again, Barbara kind of self-reflects on her personal life (or lack thereof) when she is put into a dream state by a villain.

It wasn't a bad volume but it is a very much been there-done that kind of deal and it's a shame too because they don't really put out much of Batgirl (or her spin-off Birds of Prey) and I've really enjoyed her run up until this point. Not having an overall story really brought it down.

This series is nothing more than a delivery system for every liberal cliche imaginable. It's completely in your face propaganda and barely any recognizable form of DC entertainment. It's even too rough to be used as toilet paper. I'd give it zero stars if possible.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ottimo volume, Babs alla riscossa!

Molto soddisfatta.
