Batman: Arkham: Poison Ivy (Batman (1940-2011) Book 5) Kindle & comiXology

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 156 ratings

GOTHAM'S DEADLIEST BEAUTY

Poison Ivy was once Dr. Pamela Lillian Isley, a young woman with a unique fascination with botany and toxicology. But then she was seduced and later experimented on by her mentor, Professor Jason Woodrue, also known as the super-villain Floronic Man.

Now a constant thorn in Batman's side, Poison Ivy uses the toxins in her bloodstream to make her touch fatal to whomever she chooses, giving her the ability to create pheromones that make men her slaves while she stops at nothing to ensure plant life will retake Earth.

BATMAN ARKHAM: POISON IVY collects some of the villain's greatest stories by some of the industry's greatest creators, including Robert Kanigher (THE FLASH), Gerry Conway (JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA), Neil Gaiman (THE SANDMAN), Guillem March (CATWOMAN), P. Craig Russell (WONDER WOMAN), Mark Buckingham (FABLES) and many more!

Collects BATMAN #181, #339, BATMAN: LEGENDS OF THE DARK KNIGHT #42-43, BATMAN: POISON IVY #1, BATMAN: SHADOW OF THE BAT ANNUAL #3, BATMAN VILLAIN SECRET FILES #1, DETECTIVE COMICS #23.1, GOTHAM CITY SIRENS #8, JOKER'S ASYLUM: POISON IVY #1, SECRET ORIGINS #36, THE BATMAN CHRONICLES #10, WHO'S WHO: THE DEFINITIVE DIRECTORY OF THE DC UNIVERSE #18, WHO'S WHO IN THE DC UNIVERSE #5 and WORLD'S FINEST COMICS #251-252.

Perfect Poison Ivy Comic Compilation

Perfect Poison Ivy Comic Compilation
Poison Ivy has always been my favorite Batman villainess. I love this compilation because it adds more depth to this often simplified character. I also love that it starts from Poison Ivy's first appearance in 1966 and spans to 2013 during the "Gotham City Sirens" run (a team up of Poison Ivy, Catwomen and Harley Quinn.) The stories are taken from various writer's and the different art showcases that. If you're a Poison Ivy fan or even a follower of the DC universe I'd definitely recommend adding this collection to your library. I thoroughly enjoy having it in mine and I love seeing the evolution of this character throughout the various stories.

Unlike the sister-book-collection of Scarecrow, which serves as a nice progression of time for how that titular character adapted alongside Batman as the years changed, Poison Ivy is a far more modern collection, and it's fairly justified, too. Poison Ivy wasn't as central to Batman's rogues gallery until fairly recently in time. The only extremely silver-age story is the first one, which is absolutely hilarious (in a good way) in the way only an old comic book can be. The second story, while still somewhat campy, shows how the comics industry had already started to mature, and from there, you're reading a collection of modern-feeling tales. Additionally, despite what could have been very samey (what with the same character and all), the stories contain great variety, ranging from the aforementioned silliness, to darker and more serious, to a story that, plain and simply, shows an adorable side to Ivy you aren't likely to see very often. A side note: unlike Scarecrow's volume, which felt like it wasted space with the Forever Evil tie-in, none of the stories really feel wasted here. Ivy does have a FE tie-in as well, but her story actually needs no context to enjoy, and feels justified in capping off the book.

Also unlike Scarecrow, this book shows how Poison Ivy tends to really get around in the DC Universe. Not like that (technically like that, I suppose, too); Ivy branches out from just facing Batman. She goes toe-to-toe with Wonder Woman, shares a cover with Green Lantern, teams up with classic Gotham City Sirens with Catwoman and Harley Quinn, and even has several references to the Suicide Squad peppered throughout a few of the stories.

Most importantly, this collection does a great job showing the depths and nuance of a character that could very easily be flanderized or misrepresented. Don't let the almost Penthouse-esque cover fool you. Poison Ivy is an incredibly sexy character, as intended, but is also constantly juxtaposed with her horrific and nightmarish powers, leaving victims in a state very unpleasant to look at or think about, even when they do survive. And she's definitely not a one-not villainess, either; much of the book shows just how sympathetic her character is; more than once you will see the struggle she undergoes in regards to how much humanity remains.

There are a couple of small quibbles, though nothing to undo the graces of the book. You will see brief recaps along the lines of "Dr. Woodrue experimented on me and it all changed" several times, to the point it will be noticeable, but this wasn't really a problem that could have been avoided in a collection like this. Additionally, some of the art occasionally gets blurry in blotches scattered throughout, but since it was probably an issue with the scans needed for this collection, I'm not sure that anything could have been done otherwise.

Absolutely fun to see the comic history of Poison Ivy and the various incarnations and battles she's won and done in this trade paper back. I would highly recommend for any fans of batman and his rogues gallery. These collections have been consistently fun and interesting to read and own.

Of the Batman Arkham collections that have come out over the course of the year, Poison Ivy's is one of the strongest. As with the rest of the series, the collection includes various comic story arcs from throughout the years starting with Poison Ivy's first appearance all the way up to the New 52 relaunch. Poison Ivy's collection is especially interesting as we see that the character underwent major revisions and retcons over her history. In her first appearances in the 60's, Ivy is a vapid, stereotype of a female villain who is more concerned with her looks than being an effective baddie. A Wonder Woman tie-in also tells an original origin story of Ivy's that is later retconned in a Green Lantern tie-in. More than any other Arkham collection so far, this one is fascinating just for the sake of seeing how various artists and writers have worked to bring Ivy to life and make her the well known, plant-controlling eco terrorist she is in modern comics. I was also glad to see that at least one Gotham Sirens comic got included in this collection so that fans could see a bit of the friendship between Ivy and fellow Gotham female villains Catwoman and Harley Quinn. Too bad, however, that the collection doesn't include any material from the recent Harley Quinn run where she and Ivy are out and out lovers. Also, an early comic about Ivy using her powers to brainwash Bruce Wayne into giving her the proverbial keys to the Wayne Foundation is left unresolved with the concluding chapter left out of the collection (just as annoying as when the Killer Croc collection failed to include the conclusion of his original story arc). Overall, a great collection and a must own for collectors and hardcore Batman fans.

I thought this would be a trade that covered a connected story line but it's actually a compilation of various issues (from ivy's first appearance to much more recent ones) that are linked thru her developing relationship with batman & her times in arkham/ mental facilities . you get several incarnations of her backstory & an exploration of her relationship with humanity , the plant realm , and other villains . highly recommend .
