This is my favorite part of the whole Knightfall saga. Jean Varley is gone and Gotham needs a real Batman but bruce Wayne isn't ready. So the cape and cowl are passed to whom they should have been passed on after Bane broke his back - Dick Grayson. He plays well off of Robin and comes to grips with his own insecurities as he is no longer under the shadow of his former mentor but literally has to fill his shoes. It also has a nice scene (which writers promptly forgot about) between Bruce and Dick that should have set up their new adult dynamic for years to come. So happy it is in its own volume again.

In this story Batman realizes Gotham needs a hero- even it can't be him- so he turns to his former ward to fill the role. The captivating idea is that even ordinary men can be heroes. A well-executed story and an evolution to the characters.

I am waiting for my shipment of Batman: Venom and the Knightfall storyline before I read this (I am still somewhat in the beginning stages of becoming a Batman comics collector), but I know that I will love it! (Extreme Dick Grayson fan is writing this review x3) Because I would have liked to save some money, I ordered a "Very Good" used copy, which is not the first time I order a graphic novel in that condition, but this particular copy seem to have some water damage so a lot of pages are kinda crinkled. I would not have categorized it as "Very Good", but other than that it is in pretty nice shape.
The previous graphic novels I ordered in "Very Good" condition were almost "Like New" so I have to say that I was a little disappointed in the physical condition. Other than that, I very much look forward to reading!

Dick Grayson takes on the cape and cowl for the first time, years before the events of the Battle for the Cowl

Great to see Dick Grayson as the Batman!

It’s painful for me to give this 3 stars, but personally I need to do this. The beginning of Knightfall will stick with me for years to come. What happens to Bruce, the extended encounters, and then the fallout afterwards was something to read. Getting through the Azreal stuff was sometimes a chore, and forced we through months of reading and missing real Batman. Finally, we get back on track with the return of Bruce Wayne, and what happens, Dick Grayson takes over instead. It lost a star for making me wait again for another volume, but then one more star because I have read better Robin stories. I enjoyed Robin Year One (Grayson) and Second Chances (Jason Todd) significantly more than this. This was was a little tough for me to appreciate. That said, it does have some nice moments worth reading through. But if you don’t have time, I can’t say you’d miss much, it feels like a transition but not a strong one.

This is one of my favorite Dick Grayson stories, the first to show him donning the cowl, with all that that entails: how it affects Batman's (as a corporate entity) relationship with Gordon and the rogues, for instance. It also works to illuminate what it's like to encounter Batman. A recurring note struck in stories about Dick as Batman is that he's easier to get along with than Bruce: his sense of humor and brighter life philosophy shine through. The characterization of Tim is also good. Dixon is simply one of the best Batman writers.

If you like stories about Dick as Batman, I can also recommend "Battle for the Cowl," "Long Shadows," "Batman and Robin" vols 1-3 (by Grant Morrison), and "The Black Mirror."

I also like this as a Two-Face story. Although some Two-Face fans feel that Dixon is unsympathetic to the character--and to an extent, I'd agree--my own feeling (as a Two-Face fan) is that this is necessary to balance out stories that are bogged down with flashbacks and exposition. Stories about Two-Face going to war with Dick not only convey many essentials about him directly through action and plausible dialogue, but are among the best places to see him taken seriously as a major threat, too.

Some other stories about Two-Face vs Dick: "Robin: Year One," "Nightwing: The Great Leap," and "Long Shadows" (again).

NB: I own the 2019 edition of "Prodigal." An earlier edition is considerably shorter.

4.0 out of 5 stars Knightsend part 2!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 15, 2012
I bought this book last year for £30 which I was pleased with, its an entertaining read and good to see Dick Grayson given the role of Batman which he should have got when Bane broke Bruce's back in Knightfall. The story also harks back to events in the Robin Year One graphic novel and Knightquest the crusade.
Its worth noting that if you want to pick this up then its rumoured that the story will be collected in the new edition of Knightsend due to be published in Sept 2012 so may be worth waiting for that!

If you have Batman: Knightfall and Under the cowl, this is kinda in between and around this time. I'm a huge batman/Dick Grayson fan so i would have got it anyway. Casual readers may choose to skip this.
