(Note - there's a nice bonus story in the end that isn't related to the current arc that's a five outta five)
Honestly, the story is one you read and forget, with the hope that the next writer will know how to make Bloodshot interesting again. The three-issue arc involves Bloodshot joining up with a sect of spies and then going to rescue a damsel in distress. With lots of gunplay, confusing dialogue, hard-to-follow action, scantily-clad women (doing yoga just to up the ante), and lots of cybernetics. The art felt like something Marc Silvestri might have drawn in Cyber Force: lots of posing, weird musculature, cybernetic body parts, and big guns.
There is a fourth standalone story in this volume by Eliot Rachael that is more introspective and makes use of some of the older Bloodshots Lemire created. This story still has some clunky art, but at least it doesn’t just go guns blazing for the rafters without trying to tell a story. It is more character driven and looks at the pasts of some of the other Bloodshots. It’s just a shame it has to get lumped into the mess that precedes it in this volume.
Overall, I’d say skip this volume unless you just want to keep up with all of Valiant’s characters. If this is the future for Bloodshot, however, I’d hope Valiant puts him on ice for a while until someone can think up a creative comeback for the titular hero. Comics have evolved from the art-driven craziness of the ‘90s, and I really do want a good story these days. Unfortunately, Bloodshot is not that comic right now.
Bloodshot is a one man wrecking crew, but now is teamed up with a group of secretive folk called the Burned. Bloodshot goes to save someone from his past and finds himself in New York at a horror convention.
It's all a bit uneven and it's hard to feel like there is any danger from heroes who are completely indestructible. The art isn't bad. I just want a more interesting story from this character. Maybe there isn't one.
I received a review copy of this graphic novel from Valiant Entertainment in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.
