Confusing vignettes in the life of D-List Heroes.

Confusing vignettes in the life of D-List Heroes.
I haven't been reading Marvel so much lately and I was really looking forward to the Civil War II as a story to jump back in. I expected Choosing Sides to be just that, a series of stories about how various Marvel Universe characters actually choose sides. What I got was a convoluted series of asides that seem to hodge-podge together Marvel Universe D-list and Ultimates Universe D-list celebrities into series of absolutely unengaging vignettes. So for your trade paperback money what kind of adventures do you get. Well you get black Ultimates universe Nick Fury fighting white Marvel universe Nick Fury, only to find out white Nick is a Life Model Decoy. If you are one of the maybe 10 fans of former New Warrior Night Thrasher, you get to see him fighting...someone. You get to see a bunch of construction workers vs. an angry talking steam shovel. You get to see a boxing match between Tony Stark and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau (because Justin Bieber was too busy I guess). And you get to see a Jessica Jones (drawn as sloppy, overweight and unappealing as possible) look for a missing kid and not find him.It is a almost impossible to express just how big a waste of money and time this graphic novel was. Marvel executives should be ashamed at themselves for ripping off its readers with this piece of crap.

First time reading and buying a comic book. I haven't finish reading it but I am enjoying it. The drawing looks great even though in some parts it looks wonky.

I would have rated this 3 1/2 stars. Some stories especially the first and last are very good. However, those between the bookends just don't always cut it. Just mentioning Ulysses isn't a tie in to Civil War 2 in my thinking. Art work is very good and diversified by artist and which group is the subject matter.

The main serialized story featuring Nick Fury Jr. is quite good. The rest is a mixed bag that felt like Marvel comic tryouts for new writers and artists.

Thia is the first Amazon review for this book, so I hope it helps somebody to avoid making the same mistake I did. I bought this because I am a huge fan of the Civil War II storyline currently being published by Marvel and thought that it would be cool to get some back story and see the event through the eyes of different characters. I mistakenly believed that this is what Choosing Sides would provide. The covers of the issues in my comic book store looked awesome and I couldn't wait for the TP to come out - I even advance ordered it so it arrived the day it was released. Choosing Sides was NOTHING like I had hoped. It seemed to me a hodgepodge of poorly written nonsense about characters that I don't care about, illustrated by lazy children who can't be bothered to even put any effort into their art. The first issue, featuring Nick Fury, was so bad that I assumed it could only get better from there. But then for some reason a 7-year old's I-can-read book about a talking backhoe was randomly inserted in the middle of the book, to be followed by a completely inane and meaningless scene wherein three kids have a picnic on a college campus. The most exciting thing that happened in the Jessica Jones issue was a toad getting run over by a car, which was, coincidentally, also the saddest thing that happened in the whole book. I didn't recognize any of the creators names, and it seems to me that Marvel just collected all the untalented writers and artists that were sitting around and said "here you go, churn out some random trash that we can sell under the banner of Civil War II to poor idiots who don't know better." If you're thinking of buying this because you really like the main Civil War II comics, let me reiterate that this is nothing like those. It's the difference between the Super Bowl and 3rd grade football, between John Steinbeck and Dan Brown. If you are looking for high quality superhero comics, run away as fast as you can. If you're looking for something cute and childish, just save yourself the trouble and find a decently written cute childish book, like The Dumb Bunnies. Basically no matter what you are looking for you will not find it in the contents of this book unless you happen to be an insane person who enjoys reading meaningless drivel that makes you want to put a bullet in your head.

The Iron man and Trudeau section just ruined this whole story. This is where marvel goes wrong in using contemporary figures who are controversial right now. Id hardly put Trudeau on the right side of things these days, more an authoritarian with Chinese tendencies

A bit like a B-sides / demos collection. No unifying narrative, just a bunch of snippets of people doing their own thing with no overall sense of direction. If that's your thing, I'd recommend the last four books of Game of Thrones.
