Deathstroke #3 "The Professional Part 3: By Any other Name"
Story: Christopher Priest
Pencils: Joe Bennett
Plot: Rose Wilson aka Ravager is a clairvoyant assassin that can see the immediate future and is a bouncer for a strip club. Someone has put a hit out for her, and her dad Slade Wilson aka Deathstroke and Wintergreen have come to help her. Can Slade and Rose find out who put the hit on Rose before it's too late?
Pagulayan steps down and Bennett takes over for pencilling duties this issue and at first glance their art style might seem similar, but after much inspection you see that Bennett's style is more mural-esque. Probably the best panel to see this distinction is page 3 where Rose is dressed up in a runner costume and running towards the bald hitman who is feeding the birds. The picture almost looks like it can belong in a church window and Bennett draws depth like a singular plane. It's a disorienting art style, but still works for this particular issue and I rather enjoyed the art style for its different take on Deathstroke and his environment. Also, he draws Deathstroke in many panels with the classic hilt sword instead of the katanas that the modern Slade usually uses and I thought it was a great homage to the original design.
The best part of this book is watching the banter between Slade and his daughter Rose. You know Slade loves his daughter and worries about her, but he shows it in an almost sadistic, nonchalant way. Almost like a parent teaching a kid how to swim by throwing him or her in the pool and letting his or her survival skills teach him or her type of parenting. In a way it makes sense because she is also an assassin for hire, and oftentimes you will be the target and Slade wants to make sure that his daughter is prepared at times. Rose also gets annoyed, but she also knows that her dad is right and lets him teach her in his own. Their relationship is probably one of the most complex, layered relationships I have read in a comic and I actually want to see more.
