Almost three decades after they were first released, this collection of “Excalibur” comics hold up very well. Included here is “Excalibur: The Sword is Drawn” which kicked off the “Excalibur” comic series from Marvel and the first five issues of the new series. Longtime X-Men writer Chris Claremont is in charge of the story while Alan Davis leads the art team. They both do a fine job though much of Claremont’s usual subjects and habits (mind control, characters pondering constantly) are out in full force. At the same time, “Excalibur” was far more light hearted than the “X-Men” comics from that period. Claremont assembles an odd blend of characters and even if Kitty Pryde, Nightcrawler and the Rachel Summers version of Phoenix are on the team, the comic looks far more to the Davis led “Captain Britain” project for inspiration. This is a fun story with great action scenes and some fine character moments. The villains are a strange mix though some old X-Men foes like the Juggernaut and Arcade appear. Davis does an excellent job handling the art while Claremont has a fun time pulling the strings on characters old and new. Highly recommended.

This is the classic Claremont and Alan Davis Excalibur. Written during a period where the X-men where thought to be dead, New Mutants was radically changing, and a lot of the Claremont arcs were coming to an end or a head in the late 1980s, turning into the 1990s X-men powerhouse, this book is delightful. The villains are silly, Captain Britain is largely a jerk, Nightcrawler is the moral core, Rachel is constantly vowing revenge as Phoenix, and Kitty Pryde seems older than even her later incarnations, this book is a lot of fun. Claremont and Davis are fair more meta-textual here, although it is amazing how much older this feels than the Jim Lee X-men and X-Force that were to come in just two years. I fell in love with this soap opera romance farce of a superhero X-team again just like in my early teens when I didn't pick up on all the flirting between characters or the low-level abusive relationship dynamics between Captain Britain and Meggan.
