Executive Outcomes Kindle & comiXology

3.9 3.9 out of 5 stars 39 ratings

Major Cobus Claassens commands a team of 150 mercenaries contracted to bring stability to the war-torn West African country of Sierra Leone. Battling overwhelming odds, Cobus and his men train and fight alongside a small contingent of soldiers against a murderous band of 15,000 rebel fighters bent on genocide.

No amount of soldiering has prepared the men for the vicious arena of butchery, treachery and mounting political pressure they experience while trying to do what is just.

What difference does winning make - if they lose their humanity in the process?

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

I have had the good fortune of a life that exposed me to multiple aspects of human experience. From the hallowed halls of academia in the University of Cambridge to the horrors of civil war in the former Yugoslavia. So when I was at a post-screening Q&A of Shadow Company - my documentary about modern day mercenaries - I was stunned to get this question from a lady in the 2nd row."How dare you make them human?"The answer, of course, is that the world is one giant gray area. There is no simple dividing line between black and white or good and evil. The idea that men with guns are somehow evil is as absurd as assuming that all men without guns are good. My storytelling intentions have never been to vilify or glorify. When your youth has given you two contrasting perspectives of conflict and reality you cannot unsee the importance of either of them.My goals have always been to educate and entertain while telling a story. An honest story about one of the oldest professions in the world - soldiers for hire. I did that with the documentary - and I did it again with this book. As a viewer/reader I like to be given the respect that I can make up my own mind when presented with a bunch of opinions and facts.I hope you do too. Thanks to a dude named Zack who convinced me that we could make a cool graphic novel that could stand alone. He was right. Thanks to my parents for always worrying about what I was up to - but always encouraging me to do it anyway. Yes mother - the sharks won't eat me if there are turtles around. Thanks to Cobus for trusting me to share the story of him and his men with the respect they have earned.Last but not least thanks to a pixie who stood/sat/slept by me through many nights of editing and writing and who reminded me what strong female characters are supposed to sound like, look like and feel like.Nick Bicanic, Los Angeles, May 2015

I do a whole bunch of stuff - much of it involving technology and storytelling.

Current activities include being CEO of rvlvr - a VR/AR company - and doing the Hollywood shuffle with Executive Outcomes - a story about mercenaries based on my documentary Shadow Company.

I'm also building blinq - my first ever piece of hardware and advising a few other companies.

Oh and - I like to windsurf and fly helicopters.

A lot.

Executive Outcomes - how real is this!?

Executive Outcomes - how real is this!?
You know - I expect many people to read this, purse their lips and suck in their breath and (with a superior tone of voice) question the accuracy of the book. While the names have been changed and the characters re-defined slightly, some of these (original) men are actually friends of mine. Brothers in arms, if you prefer. But, if you met them you would never know what their eyes have seen, their hands have done and their minds have thought. This book reveals some of the dynamics of the history of Executive Outcomes in a graphic novel - something easy to follow. When you read this book, remember that South Africans were - and still are - exposed to a level of aggression and violence that might not be common in many countries. Former soldiers (I used to be a Marine, myself) will recognize the minor idiosyncrasies of that "period" almost immediately. And it is entertainingly shocking how it just makes those memories flood right back into consciousness. The sounds, the sights, the smells, the emotions. All of it.If you want to sit back, relax, pour a bourbon, light a cigar and step into the boots of the men that made Executive Outcomes as popular as they became, without the risk of actually getting shot yourself... Read this graphic novel and remember the following:1. This is the way it went down, for the most part.2. Those men are not mere "characters." They are real.3. The kinds of battles these guys fought, are not the same as modern "warfare" in a US-led international "relief effort."4. The "issues" at play in countries like Sierra Leone are nothing like "crime" or "poverty" alone - trust me.I would recommend that every person with an interest in the history of Executive Outcomes, anyone with a history in African Warfare and everyone merely "missing the good old days" read this. This is a graphic novel but by no measure pure fiction. Not even close. There is nothing better than to see the world, as you knew it, unpacked in such graphic detail, right in front of you. When I speak to my friends, we now laugh at some of "those days" but I assure you; there is nothing light hearted about conflict on the African continent.Enjoy. I did!

Great action packed true story about unsung heroes that won't get their due because of the cancer of political correctness.

Enjoyed the story and art style. Paints a bleak picture of international politics in regards to genocidal regimes.

A good read.

I'm a big fan of graphic novels, and I appreciate reading about actual historical events in graphic novel format. Based on the title, I assumed this would tell the interesting story about Executive Outcomes. Wrong. No historical context at all, just a random, overpriced comic book written for 10 year-olds, at best. I got about halfway through, and when it became clear that it wouldn't get any better, I threw it in the trash. I didn't want to sell it or even give it away for free to save everyone else from wasting their time with this drivel. This subject could have been so good in graphic novel format, but total failure instead. An insult.

A very good and graphic depiction of the involvement of ex-SADF soldiers in stabilising what had threatened to become a massive killing field in Sierra Leone. Although one can certainly debate upon the merits of using mercenaries in Africa, in this particular case AND in the Nigerian Boko Haram conflict, South African guys prevented a lot of murder and rape of innocent civilians by their intervention. Well done guys. We salute you!
