Top review from the United States

I used to be a fan of Chris Claremont- how could you not be? This is the guy who produced THE defining comic book of the late 70s and through the 80s. He's the man who brought us the Phoenix saga, Days of Future Past and countless other great things.

But he's slipped in the past 10 years, and this Exiles trade is a perfect example. It's like his writing style got stalled somewhere down the line, and all he knows are the same boring, used up conventions: mind control, white slavery, that sort of thing. If that's your cup of tea, cool. You'll probably enjoy this book- the art's decent, and if you know nothing about the Exiles previously, then go for it.

If you're a long-time Exiles fan like I am, however... witness the decline of what was a great franchise. Dangling plot threads, characters that pop in and out with no explanation (mini-Heather??) and glaring continuity errors (we're not supposed to be able to see the outside of the Crystal Palace because, well, there IS no outside) demonstrated to me that Claremont didn't do his homework before jumping onto this title. He didn't get the characters- he just picked them up, threw away the ones he didn't like, and misused the rest.

Plus he shoehorned in Psylocke because she's "his" pet character, and she doesn't fit. I was hoping for some sort of resolution about TJ and T-Bird's baby, but no dice. Instead we have Betsy suddenly becoming the leader of the team and making nice with everyone like she's known them all her life.

Not for me. If you like Claremont's work in the late 90s, though, you'll dig this.
