Fables Vol. 9: Sons of Empire (Fables (Graphic Novels)) Kindle & comiXology

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 230 ratings

WINNER OF FOURTEEN EISNER AWARDS. The free Fables living in the mundane world have struck a decisive blow against the Adversary, destroying one of his most valuable assets at the very heart of his empire--and setting the stage for an all-out world between the worlds in the process. Now, while the ruler of the Homelands licks his wounds and gathers his forces, the denizens of Fabletown have a rare chance to savor the brief peace their victory has brought them. Everyone, however, knows that this is just the calm before the storm--and that even the winds themselves have to choose before it's over. Collects issues #52-59 in Bill Willingham's Eisner Award-winning Vertigo series.

Excellent contrasts in the family dynamics of the fable town and empire characters made for a terrific study - and sets up some interesting stories for the future. The variation in artists made this challenging to read though. - I liked the original series' artwork the most to date.

Absolutely love this series. It keeps getting better

Gepetto is busy planning his next move since Bigby's attack on his empire. We get a look into the lives of Bigby & Snow & their 6 children, giving us more insight into Bigby's character as well as developing the children into independent characters. This volume also has several fun "shorts," only a couple of pages long. The final issue included herein is a fan service, with more shorts that answer burning questions posed by fans. I definitely have the feeling that we are building to a truly epic confrontation between the Adversary's armies in the Homelands & the Fables in our mundane world. I'm enjoying this series a lot and can't wait to see what's next.

I absolutely love these Fables and seeing how the fairytales function now that their stories are different. And I do like seeing how some characters are growing and how others are so different from what we know them to be.

Loved it.

I certainly enjoyed the questions at the end of the book. Also the overall storyline was well thought out and put together.

I think Fables is one of the best conceived ideas in modern comics, at least up until issue 50. Ijust found this collection to be much weaker than all that has come before it.

This story really expands upon the 2 main plotlines of the series so far. Bigby and his father have to sort out some of their differences for the sake of family, and in the homelands the empire plots to crush fabletown and the whole 'real' world to end the rebellion and complete their conquest.
Amongst all of this there are hints at other potential future directions for the story, as well as a magnificent readers Q & A section where questions are illustrated in line with the rest of the comic.
This is another brilliant TP of one of my all time favourite comic books.
