Jodorowsky and Mœbius's internationally bestselling Sci-Fi saga THE INCAL comes to its phenomenal finale ! Lowly class 'R' detective John Difool and his faithful companion, Deepo, are unwillingly hurled into yet another universe-saving mission, as their world is faced with the threat of an all-devouring metallic virus. Visionary storyteller Jodorowsky returns to the epic mythology he created with the late Mœbius in the early 80s. For the conclusion of the legendary spiritual space adventure series, he partners with Eisner-winning artist Ladrönn ( Cable, Hip Flask, Elephantmen ).

Review

"...this is one of those works that simply cannot be appropriately distilled into a review. It’s far too grand and something that quite literally needs to be seen and held in order to be appreciated as it was intended. "
- All-Comic.com
"There is, then, in 'Final Incal,' no hint of a dulling of the edge, nor any softening of Jodorowsky’s aesthetic. The maestro still delights in shocking his audience; he still loves mutations and deformity, but he is also willing to be utterly brazen in delivering an alarmingly naïve message (only true love can save us from turning into unfeeling metallic beings, man) just as he was completely unembarrassed about introducing us to a giant golden god-baby at the end of the original 'Incal'. "
- tcj.com
"Ladrönn’s artwork is nothing short of awe-inspiring. No detail is spared... I can think of no artist I would have rather have rendered it – including Mœbius himself by the time this book was made."
- FloridaGeekScene.com
"'Final Incal' is Jodorowsky at his mad, imaginative best, and fans of ‘The Incal’ are sure to enjoy plunging headfirst back into the world of John DiFool."

About the Author

Ladronn grew up drawing and inking in Mexico while idolizing artists such as Mœbius. Ladronn has drawn for Marvel, DC, and several independent publishing houses. He won an Eisner Award for his work on Hip Flask back in 2006. He is currently working on Son of El Topo with frequent collaborator, Alexandro Jodorowsky.

Alejandro Jodorowsky (also known as Alexandro Jodorowsky) is a Chilean film and theatre director, screenwriter, playwright, actor, comic book writer, author, poet, mime, musician, and spiritual guru. He is best known for his avant-garde, cult films, such as "El Topo," a midnight movie favorite.

Jean Giraud aka Mœbius was a French artist, cartoonist, and writer, who worked in the Franco-Belgian bandes dessinées tradition. Giraud earned worldwide fame, predominantly under the pseudonym Mœbius, which he used to create a wide range of science fiction and fantasy comics in a highly imaginative and surreal, almost abstract style. Esteemed by Federico Fellini, Stan Lee and Hayao Miyazaki, among many others, he is considered as the most influential bande dessinée artist, and a continued influence to filmmakers and artists around the world.

I will try to explain the different English language editions of this book, because it can be very confusing. Try to confirm which edition you are buying first. This "Ultra-Deluxe Collector's Edition" is a very super-sized edition "Coffee Table Book", more expensive for being so large (12 x 16 inches) and being limited to 200 copies. You can find a video online, that was made by the publisher, showing it off if you search for "Final Incal Ultra Deluxe Edition". This edition is the only place you can find the original Moebius After The Incal pages at the "Coffee Table Book" large size. There is a extra large size "coffee table book Final Incal" (also 12 x 16 inches) drawn by Ladronn which is limited to 750 copies at $189 and at a more standard size of 7.9 x 10.8 inches for $35 (both of these versions to not have the Moebius After the Incal pages, only the complete Final Incal cycle by Ladronn, but the smaller hardcover has an author's interview that seems to be exclusive to that edition). Both the Moebius After the Incal pages and the Ladronn Final Incal versions are collected in the slightly oversized ( 9.4 x 12.6 inches) "Final Incal Classic Collection" but this Ultra-Deluxe is unique for the extra-large Moebius pages. To be honest, it is the Ladronn art that benefits most from the supersizing in this edition, the Moebius After The Incal pages look totally fine in the slightly smaller but still oversized "Final Incal - Oversized Deluxe Edition: Classic Collection", which was limited to 1,500 copies and was sold for $100. The The other things that makes the Ultra Deluxe so unique: the signed bookplate by Jodorowsky and Ladronn, the three nice loose art prints that are included in a tray in the back of the book (those are not signed), the slipcase and cover of the book are different from the other editions out there (one note: the cover image on this amazon page IS NOT the actual cover of this book or its slipcase, but one of loose art prints has that picture on it), and this book comes in its own special cardboard box that protects it during shipping (at least mine did, and you can see the box in the video I mentioned). I believe the publisher's original price was $590. Most of this information is on the publisher website: http://www.humanoids.com/book/535

This is difficult to review, if you have the current one with "After the Incal" you can see the story start twice: once with Moebius and once with Ladronn. Jodorowsky's Incal stories got more and more relatable in time, particularly when he wrote the "Before the Incal," which, while still have some objectively laughable dialogue, did give you far more consistent characters than Incal itself. It also contextualized "The Incal" in a way that made its themes clearer. Both the Moebius and Ladronn versions of the story pick up and try to integrate the events of "Before the Incal" with "The Incal" in a way that makes John DiFools character more consistent. The story telling possibilities seemed more interesting in the Moebius version, but I must say, I actually like Ladronn's art a little more.

Making "The Incal" a dream, however, was both lazy and inconsistent with the story. It was clear that Jodorowsky liked the symbolism of the Incal, but did not like some of the narrative problems. It also doesn't make sense since there are some continuities issues that this creates even in the Ladronn version. Now many will point out that story is prosperous, which is true, but that was true for ALL the comics in the Jodoverse except for the short stories like vignettes in "Screaming Planet." Furthermore, there is actual character development here which most Jodorowsky comics lack in a way his films do not.

Still it doesn't have the pop of originality of the first Incal and not as a narratively developed as "Before the Incal." It is, however, better than a lot of the other space operas out there.

1.0 out of 5 stars PLEASE NOTE: Kindle version is part 3 only
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 1, 2015
Please be aware although the hardback version is the full 3 parts, the Kindle edition only appears to be part 3 which is approx 50 pages. it's more obvious if you come via the kindle store but if, like me, you come via the paper version then choosethe kindle option note that you will not be receiving the full 3 volumes, and amazon don't appear to sell the kindle versions of vols 1 & 2 separately.
I have contacted amazon to let them know as it appears the US kindle version is all 3 parts, judging by the reviews.
thanks.
