Guardians of the Galaxy: New Guard Vol. 1: Emperor Quill (Guardians of the Galaxy (2015-2017)) Kindle & comiXology

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 177 ratings

Collects Guardians Of The Galaxy (2015) #1-5.

Peter Quill has abandoned the Guardians and his role as Star-Lord to be emperor of the Spartax! Now, Rocket has grabbed the reins as team leader — backed up by Drax, Venom, Groot, Kitty Pryde and brand-new Guardian Ben Grimm, the ever-lovin' blue-eyed Thing! But what could put the team into the crosshairs of Emperor Quill and his Imperial Guard? Another old face is back, too — but will it be a welcome return for Gamora, or have circumstances changed in the eight months she has been away? When friends like these cause complications for Rocket and the gang, who needs enemies? They don't, but they seem to attract them anyway. And the newest threat to the galaxy is a doozy. His name is Yotat the Destroyer — and he will have blood.

A decent enough read on its own, though be warned that this requires you having read a previous series to fully understand the plot.

Spoiler below!

I fail to see the point of putting Star-Lord off to the side and making Rocket the new leader if the team is just going to constantly usurp him and you're going to just bring Peter back into the team at the end of the volume anyway...

Brian Michael Bendis has been writing GOTG for a few years now, but this is the post-Secret-War relaunch. Peter Quill has become the King of Spartax, Kitty Pryde has taken on the Star Lord mantle, and the Thing from the Fantastic Four has joined the Guardians.Tragically, despite of all these mix-ups, Bendis still hasn't found his footing with this series. I purchased this volume hoping the relaunch would finally do something worthwhile with the franchise but this book only reminded me why I dislike Bendis' run so much. It's a fun ride the whole way through but it's all ultimately shallow and forgettable.

The biggest issue here is the story, or the lack thereof. This entire 5-issue arc revolves around the Guardians brawling it out with 2 powerful villains that want revenge against them. That's really it! The first villain shows up, they brawl until the Guardians win, then the second villain shows up, and they brawl until the Guardians win. You would think that with two villains in one arc, Bendis might do something a little more interesting but as always, he resorts to the trite, meaningless storytelling that has plagued his run from the start. Worse, these two villains are actually carried over from Bendis' even-more-mediocre, "Guardians of Knowhere" (aka "what were the guardians up to during Secret Wars") but I have no idea why Bendis felt the need to continue with these villains. They were just as shallow in Guardians of Knowhere so their continued presence here only hammers home how dull they are. Both of these characters could have been dealt with in 1 or 2 issues but Bendis has dragged these slug-fests out over 9 issues! (Also, in case you're wondering, you definitely do not have to read Guardians of Knowhere to understand this)

I was astonished by how little there actually is in some of these issues. It often descends into mind-numbing action, one explosion after another. An alarming number of the pages in this book have no dialog at all! I would be fine with this if the action was great but that, too, is incredibly generic. There's lots of explosions and the large roster of characters is used well but it ALWAYS resorts to being a slug-fest. Also, as you would probably expect, the characters constantly banter between one another but it's never particularly witty or funny. Nothing here comes close to the wit or comedy of the Abnett/Lanning run. As many have pointed out, the Guardians here have been dumbed down here to match their movie counterparts more closely but we've wound up with amalgamations that are much less likable than either the comics or the movies. Star Lord is an arrogant jerk, Rocket is nuts, Drax is stupid, etc. The Thing is actually pretty likeable here so I'd praise his addition. That said, I have to criticize the other shakeups and how completely pointless they turn out to be. Kitty is Star Lord and Peter becomes King... for ONE ISSUE before the Guardians go get Peter again. What was the point of those shakeups when you negated them after one issue? We're back to business as usual almost immediately and that is a huge disappointment. I am not purchasing any more volumes of Bendis' run (which thankfully will be over soon).

This book was a fun but forgettable read for me. I scorched through it in about an hour, which is fast for me but I wished I had just read it on Marvel Unlimited. While it has action, adventure, witty dialog, and a diverse roster of characters, every aspect of it is ultimately just serviceable. And that's how I feel about Bendis' run as a whole: it's serviceable. There's lots of explosions, the roster of characters keeps rotating, and things move at a quick pace. It's all enjoyable to read but it never transcends past the aforementioned explosions and superhero banter. It never delves deeper with any of these characters and the shallow, simplistic storytelling feels like it was written for ten year olds. And that, to me, is the perfect kind of comic to read on Marvel Unlimited. Don't waste your money on this shallow, forgettable run.

Fun adventure with the Guardians of the Galaxy! Nice illustrations and fun to read digital comic. Interesting storyline and classic snarky Guardians comments.

Reads just like the movie and its characters.. action-packed and witty, with the added charm of the ever loving blue-eyed Thing..

This TPB is a rollicking melodrama packed with non-stop brawls and snarky cascades of verbal abuse which follows the familiar generic expectations established as much by the recent Guardians film than the comic book canon.

A witty action riddled ride. A humorous galactic scale tome that promises more good things to come! Brian Michael Bendis as always brings us bold and well conceived, top draw characterisation and a plot that weaves them into great fiction!
