Hellboy: The Complete Short Stories Volume 1 Kindle & comiXology

4.8 4.8 out of 5 stars 758 ratings

The ultimate introduction to this supernatural hero features 16 standalone stories with Mignola's greatest collaborators--stories that can be read in any order.

This 368-page volume covers Hellboy's adventures from 1947 to 1961, reprinting stories from
The Chained Coffin, The Right Hand of Doom, The Bride of Hell, The Crooked Man, The Troll Witch, and Hellboy's childhood adventure, The Midnight Circus, drawn by Duncan Fegredo, artist of The Wild Hunt, the basis for Neil Marshall's 2019 film Hellboy.

In 1994 Mike Mignola released the first
Hellboy series, Seed of Destruction, as Hellboy faced his supposed destiny as Beast of the Apocalypse. Before that, he'd spent fifty years fighting monsters as a somewhat carefree member of the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense. The Complete Short Stories Volumes 1 & 2 present those early adventures.

"The Crooked Man" and "Double Feature of Evil," both of which earned Mignola and his legendary collaborator Richard Corben Eisner Awards, are collected with the complete "Hellboy in Mexico" saga, featuring collaborations with Corben, Mick McMahon, Gabriel Ba, and Fabio Moon, as well as one of Mignola's early masterpiece, "The Corpse."

The two volumes of
The Complete Short Stories together with the four volume Hellboy Omnibus series collect all of Mignola's award-winning Hellboy stories in chronological order for a definitive reading experience.

Mike Mignola is best known as the multiple award-winning creator, writer, and artist of "B.P.R.D." and "Hellboy", but has fostered several other projects like "The Amazing Screw-On Head" and "Baltimore" with Christopher Golden. Although he began working as a professional cartoonist in the early 1980s, drawing 'a little bit of everything for just about everybody' - including characters like Batman and Wolverine - he was also a production designer on the Disney film "Atlantis: The Lost Empire". Mignola also acted as a visual consultant to Guillermo del Toro on "Blade 2" and the film versions of Hellboy, which were broadly adapted by del Toro from the original comic series. Mike Mignola currently lives in southern California with his wife, daughter, and cat.

Well Hellboy is amazing and the short stories are awesome too…And that’s the reason I bought the physical copy to put in my shelf. Well they didn’t even bother to put bubble wrap or anything it was just inside a cart board envelope. Thanks for the awesome care 🫶🏼

I've always been a massive fan of Hellboy and yearned to learn more about him and his world. With the reboot movie coming soon, I'm pleased that I will be going in with more knowledge of Hellboy and have great fun comparing and contrasting; Hellboy is truly one of the best comic book heroes to be created and I highly recommend this book for anyone eager to know Hellboy 's early days in chronological order and truly gain a great understanding. A fantastic read indeed.

As a longtime Hellboy fan, the attraction here was to get all the short stories that I'd not been able to get in the one-off comic book form, or that were included in other compilations, and this first volume does not disappoint, as while I recognized a number of the stories, quite a few were also completely new to me.

The second attraction of this collection is that it allows you to re-read the stories in the chronological order of Hellboy's life - not the backwards and forwards, flashback order that the stories were actually published in. That gives them a greater coherence, even when drawn by different artists. It may be sacrilege to say it, but while I'll always have a soft spot for Mignola's original version of Hellboy (which I didn't really care for when the series first emerged), I think I like Richard Corben's version almost as much.

There is the obligatory sketchbook section at the end of the volume, but that's the only 'added extra' you get. It's still a worthwhile purchase though. One thing that strikes me as a bit odd is that even though the book is the same size as the regular trade paperback collections, it somehow feels smaller - perhaps the fact it's twice as many pages plays a perception trick on you, but it's the exact same size. Regardless, an excellent warm up for the full omnibus version of all the major Hellboy stories due later in 20201.

This softback is volume 1 compiling all the Hellboy short stories not part of the longer series such as Seed of Destruction, Wake the Devil, etc. Presented in chronological order, it begins with Pancakes and ends with The Iron Shoes. If you have all the Omnibus or Library editions, you already have these stories, but it's kind of cool to read them in the order they happened in "real life."

Got this for my boyfriend’s collection and he loves it so much! They get a little banged up in delivery but it’s a great purchase.

Great short stories here. My favorites are the one in Mexico (would the brujo make an appearance later?).
The artwork varies a lot so if that is something that you care, maybe you won't enjoy this as much.

I love this collection. Not every story hits, but most of them do and they're great. If you're looking for a little introduction to Hellboy or a little history/backstory, this is the book for you.

Great writing and amazing art at a bargain price.

Love that they're finally compiling the short stories, too. Before it was difficult to obtain all of them, much less read them in chronological order. A must have for collectors and those new to the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars mignola e richard corben, juntos. só isso.
Reviewed in Brazil on November 16, 2019

5.0 out of 5 stars The expanded Hellboy universe is forever interesting!

I find the short stories a little bit less engaging than the longer runs in the other omnibus collections, but there are nuggets of gold to found everywhere! It's nice that Mike ties in many of these stories to the main story thread, even if it is only via a throw away line or two.
