Mike Mignola is best known as the multiple award-winning creator, writer, and artist of "B.P.R.D." and "Hellboy", but has fostered several other projects like "The Amazing Screw-On Head" and "Baltimore" with Christopher Golden. Although he began working as a professional cartoonist in the early 1980s, drawing 'a little bit of everything for just about everybody' - including characters like Batman and Wolverine - he was also a production designer on the Disney film "Atlantis: The Lost Empire". Mignola also acted as a visual consultant to Guillermo del Toro on "Blade 2" and the film versions of Hellboy, which were broadly adapted by del Toro from the original comic series. Mike Mignola currently lives in southern California with his wife, daughter, and cat.

These are short stories from early in Hellboy's career, fragments of atmosphere and feeling. They show the quiet struggle of the monster destined for evil who chooses instead the side of the angels, and that's exactly the stuff that makes me a sucker for Hellboy.

But the stories never get too complicated: The subtext may be all about Hellboy's inner struggle, but the text is about how he masks it - by smashing his way through whatever obstacles he can. I think a lot of us feel, as Hellboy does, that we are feeble-minded and inadequate. That the best we can do is to swing blindly and hope blunt force will carry us semi-safely through.

Ill admit, the first 3 volumes didnt grab me very much, but i pushed through and held out hope because i liked the movies and wanted to like the comic. A lot of the volumes have short stories that are basically episodic and don't tie together much in the grand scheme of things, but in this one there were several call backs to previous stories which i enjoy because it makes the grand story seem more planned out than i originally thought. I liked the first 3 volumes, but so far this one is my favorite.

Mignola has created more than just another comic character, he's really set a standard for this paranormal genre both from a story line and artistic perspective. I've been a huge Marvel fan since I was a kid (and still am), but Mignola's work has compelled me to look outside of Marvel and DC to discover a host of other amazing work. I own all the Hellboy trades now and will be adding other related work to my collection. As a side note, I'd have to say the animated DVDs are also a lot of fun!
