How I Tried to Be a Good Person (Today Is the Last Day of the Rest of Your Life) Kindle & comiXology

4.0 4.0 out of 5 stars 15 ratings

Lust's follow-up to her first internationally lauded graphic memoir, How I Tried to Be a Good Person, picks up directly where its predecessor left off. Revealing and powerful, Lust recounts her life as a young, enthusiastic anarchist making her way in Vienna in the 1990s - and of her love for two men: the "perfect companion" Georg, an actor twenty years her elder, and the "perfect lover," Kimata, a Nigerian man-about-town. As her relationships with the two men evolve, jealousy increasingly mounts and leads to emotional and violent outbreaks that threaten her life.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Lust’s examination of a pivotal and formative period of her life leaves no stone unturned and stands out for its absolute emotional honesty. Brave, confident, and visually literate in the extreme, How I Tried establishes its author as a true master of the medium."
Four Color Apocalypse

"Lust’s energetic, searching book ... reveals the power of desire ― and the pain when jealousy rears its head."
The Guardian

"Lust is determined to live her truth, even occasionally putting herself in physical danger. At other times, she’s left contemplating the line between self-actualization and selfishness. Lust relates all this in an uncompromisingly frank manner, with anthropological detail. It’s a rich narrative."
The Comics Journal

"Lust’s bluntly honest account grants us a look at a courageous but alarming life."
Booklist

"An intimate and imaginative follow-up graphic memoir to Lust's Ignatz award–winning punk travelogue."
Publishers Weekly

"A wonderful testament to the power of auto-bio graphic memoir."
Comics Grinder

"The very definition of a warts and all memoir, this is a complex and meaty read."
Irish Examiner

Top reviews from the United States

Saw another reviewer here complain about the characters not being likable, but that's the point! Lust does an amazing job at making her characters, including herself, three dimensional, and you can like and dislike them at the same time. The way she draws landscapes and facial expressions continues to be emotionally impactful. This book is pretty hot and heavy at times, and real/tragic in others. She brings you into both beautiful and utterly uncomfortable moments, and as a reader you have to reckon with both. This book is very "slice of life", so it isn't always clear where the story is going, but the details add up over time. Hard to put down!

Mediocre artwork and a go-nowhere story about a woman who abandons her child so she can get high and have meaningless affairs with any man who looks at her twice. It's like a bad comic version of 90 Day Fiancee and the ending isn't just disappointing. It's pointless. The title makes no sense. No one is trying to be a good person here. No character but the innocent child is likeable. Even her parents enable her selfishness. If I could give it 0 stars, I would.

Autobiographical account of an attempt at a polyamorous relationship, albeit not one handled with particularly good communication or among particularly likeable people. Some of it was interesting although there were also sequences which I had trouble deciphering.

Uli vuelve a la carga con un relato que no te deja indiferente. Me ha gustado que trate el tema del apego. Ferén.
