Incredible Hulk Epic Collection: The Leader Lives (Incredible Hulk (1962-1999) Book 3) Kindle & comiXology

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 76 ratings

Collects Incredible Hulk (1968) #102-117 and Annual #1, and material from Tales To Astonish (1959) #97-101 And Not Brand Echh #9.

I smash, you smash, but nobody, nobody, smashes like Hulk smash! Leaping out of the pages of TALES TO ASTONISH and into his own ongoing title again, the Incredible Hulk has twice the space to shake the Earth with his mighty rage. And he'll need it! The Hulk travels far and wide — but doesn't make too many friends along the way! The jade giant's travelogue of destruction leaves the Mandarin, the Inhumans, the Sandman and the entire Savage Land rubbing sore jaws. And when Hulk's archnemesis the Leader returns, all bets are off — as writer Stan Lee joins with iconic Hulk artist Herb Trimpe (who makes his debut in this very volume!) to pull out all the stops!

Item arrived well enough with a few creases but still in pretty good condition. Some very, very faint discoloring and stains on a couple of pages though.

OK first off this should be a five star review because the stories are just great and these have not been reprinted to death. The Leader, my favorite Hulk villain. Sometimes they really get their Kirby on with the far out space scapes that is so much of their time. (Kinda makes you want to watch 2001: A Space Odyssey again). The Manfdarin, the Rhino and other classic villains make appearances in this collection as well, plus all the pathos that is Bruce Banner/The Hulk.

But the graphic novel itself - what happened to the quality? First off Amazon just slipped it into a cardboard sleeve that had openings at both end (and in fact was coming apart by the time it made it to my doorstep) so it slid around and got raunched corners and the top and bottom of the spine. Maybe my mail carrier read it first? The covers don't seem as thick, neither do the pages. It was glued together shoddily - there is a big honking line of dried glue running down the back of the spine. I guess now I don't have to worry about keeping it in pristine shape.

So if you like the Hulk, want to know more about his early days, buy it, get it, read it, love it. I just hope you get a better copy than I did.

BTW when are they going put all those lovely "Not Brand Echh" stories in one volume? Hilarious.

For what it's worth my copy isn't bad at all, a really OCD collector might find fault but I'm not seeing any of the issues others are reporting

I really wanted to like this book so badly. I'm a sucker for classic Marvel Super-Heroes tales and the Hulk is my all time favorite character. The stories themselves are fine, but the build quality on this book was so bad I sent it back. The spine of the book was ribbed and the inside covers had glue stuck to the front & back pages. Also the paper stock was flimsy (think: Grocery store magazines) and the cover was made from cheap laminated cardstock. A total fail by the printer on this one. If they ever do a reprint with better quality, I'll be the first in line to buy it. But for now I give it an F with zero stars.

First, obligatory quality warning, sadly something I've had to do for the last few Epics this year - my copy of this book is generally fine, although the cover is veeeery slightly misaligned, meaning that sadly there's a big red stripe on the spine, which kinda ruins the look of your EC shelf if you have a bunch of these. If that's not something that would bother you, by all means, don't worry about it, just thought I'd mention it just in case. Happily, it seems that Marvel are currently investigating the printer that's produced this last handful of sub-par editions, so this shouldn't be a problem for very much longer.

And now, on to the book! Volume 3 of the jolly green giant's adventures brings a namechange from Tales to Astonish to simply The Incredible Hulk, meaning he has the whole comic to himself for the first time since his debut run. The creative teams (mostly writers Stan Lee and Gary Friedrich and artists Marie Severin and Herb Trimpe) waste no time in taking advantage of their newfound space, sending the mean green behemoth careering around the Marvel universe fists-first.

In short order he's battled the Sub-Mariner, the Rhino, the Mandarin, Sandman, what seems like every Inhuman and half the Savage Land. Thanks to the snappy pace of the stories, what could have been a somewhat repetitive series of super-powered slugfests stays fresh, the befuddled Hulk dragged from one destructive conflict to another in his search for a moment of peace.

In fact, there's not that much Bruce Banner at this point in the story, the tortured scientist spending most of his time enraged, although he reverts back for several key issues, mostly revolving around his complicated relationship with his paramour Betty, her father "Thunderbolt" Ross and romantic rival Glen Talbot, particular once archnemesis the Leader returns.

Extras include a Not Brand Echh story, 12 pages of original art by Severin, Trimpe and Jim Steranko, four pages of caricatures by Severin and the cover of the third Hulk Masterowrk volume. I wouldn't say these are the finest tales of the Hulk, but they're certainly an interesting part of the character's formative years.
