Following on from the startling revelation in the last story arc, Tony and his new, errr...partner Arno (I'm still trying not to reveal the spoil), are working together to build a city of the future. Tony has visions of a better world, and using his own genius and some of the alien tech/knowledge/ideas discovered in his recent journeys in space, sets about building his first prototype.
But where to start? Since the death of the Mandarin, Mandarin City has become feral and ripe for development, and is perfect for Stark's rebuilding plans. With factories run by a Stark core nicknamed TROY, and controlled by an A.I. known as H.E.L.E.N., his first city of the future is underway.
Meanwhile, the deceased Mandarin's rings have become sentient, and they are on the search for new hosts. Hosts that have the will to defeat Tony Stark. The ring known as Mandarin Seven, aka Incinerator, finds a host in the form of radical journalist Abigail Burns, who happens to hate Stark and all that he stands for. With the new villainous name of Red Peril and utilising the ring's power of the heart of a star, she sets about destroying Troy and generally upsetting Stark.
As more rings find more hosts (including an Inhuman from the Inhumanity tie-in), Iron Man's problems go from bad to worse.
And that's not all. Someone seeks the Mandarin's rings for himself. Someone bad. This player, when he makes his move, is going to throw all kinds of trouble into the mix.
This is a terrific story and is paced nicely. I thought it might have been a bit short with just 5 issues (which is the average story arc span I know), but the Inhuman tie-in spreads it out evenly. There's some neat elements added in - a stealth suit, plenty of Iron Man drones, Arno's own method of helping Iron man, and the rings of course. There's a great scene in the Inhumanity tie-in where the ring known as Nightbringer goes on the hunt for a host, waying up the pros and cons of some of the candidates; such as the Hulk, Venom and the Red Skull.
The artwork by Joe Bennett (Agustin Padilla for the Inhumanity issue) is great and as ever, Gillen weaves a story fill of snappy Stark dialogue and plenty of action. The whole creative team have brought us a delightful story that introduces an interesting new character in Abigail Burns (I hope there's more of her to come), and the scene is set for the mysterious villain who wants the Mandarin rings for himself.
This story is a "what happened next?" in 3 ways - the aftermath of the Mandarin's demise, what Tony does next on his return to Earth, and how his relationship with Arno works. If you're interested in any of these things, or just after some great Iron Man action, then this is the book for you.
