Jim Henson's A Tale of Sand Kindle & comiXology

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 130 ratings

The groundbreaking 3-time Eisner Award-winning graphic novel, now available digitally for the first time! Join us as we explore this missing piece of Jim Henson's career in a celebration of his creative process, gorgeously brought to life by acclaimed illustrator Ramon K. Perez (Wolverine and the X-Men, Spider Man: Year One). Discovered in the Archives of The Jim Henson Company, Tale of Sand is an original graphic novel adaptation of an unproduced, feature-length screenplay written by Jim Henson and his frequent writing partner, Jerry Juhl. Tale of Sand follows scruffy everyman, Mac, who wakes up in an unfamiliar town, and is chased across the desert of the American Southwest by all manners of man and beast of unimaginable proportions. Produced with the complete blessing of Henson co-CEO Lisa Henson, Tale of Sand was hailed as a groundbreaking achievement upon release, winning the Eisner Awards for Best Graphic Album, Best Penciller/Inker, and Best Production Design, as well as winning the Harvey Awards for Best Graphic Novel and Best Artist.

My wife is a huge Jim Henson fan and I've always been an admirer of Perez's work in comics. So this is a match made in heaven for us! I was lead to this graphic novel by Skottie Young (if you're a fan of great comic art like Perez, then Young is another artist you should not miss... *cough* *cough*) and I have to say, after reading, that I have not been lead astray. The print quality of this graphic novel is beyond everything I have come to expect from titles today...lovely craftsmanship. The story is portrayed brilliantly by Perez's flowing artwork and brings a huge complement to Henson and Juhl's screenplay.

If you are in anyway a fan of great minds coming together to create an intriguing and mystifying project then look no further...Tale of Sand is a wonderful collaboration and all those involved in making this project happen have my thanks for bringing this to my wife and I's collection.

Ramon K Perez is an incredible illustrator, He would have to be to undertake this fever dream of a story adapted from a screenplay by Jim Henson. Tale of Sand is beautifully rendered and takes on many characteristics of a dreamlike state. It lacks a clear linear narrative and there are seemingly nonsensical twists and turn and, improbable characters and situations. Perez approaches the subject matter with the utmost seriousness and delivers beautifully. The art fluctuates from monochromatic to saturated computer colors to water colors and back again. These artistic fluctuations promote the dream state feel. They fit together oddly in the story but translate the script to pictures perfectly. Tale of Sand has helped Mr. Perez rocket to the top of my list of favorite draftsmen and rightfully so.

First of all, I'm not big admirer of Jim Henson's work. I think that Muppets is a landmark creation but I not consider myself a fan. Definitely not. But what this book represent is a different thing. This is not a program for youngers with well constructed characters, clever dialogues and good jokes.
This is a profound and surreal fairytale. When read this book the feel you will experience is comparable with the sensation of see a Tim Burton's or Terry Gilliam's movie, or like read a Neil Gaiman's tale.
About the art of "Tale of Sand", everything is outstanding. It's something between J.H.William III, Cliff Chiang and Moebius (!). Characters, scenarios, diagramation, colors, everything works as they should. Is a true banquet for the eyes.
So, definitely you should give a chance for this one ... you have a huge chance of regret if you not read it.

Perez instantly became one of my favorite artists because of this book!
I cannot recommend this book more highly to anyone, whether you're into graphic novels or not. The story telling is AMAZING. It's all pretty surreal and ridiculous, sometimes confusing, but that makes the experience all the more dreamlike and fantastical.
The crazy thing is, the script calls for minuscule amounts of dialogue, which for so many stories, carries the plot. But in this book, the skillfulness of the illustrator to express the plot and create story flow is staggering. The only reason there are confusing parts is because that is what the script called for, it was on purpose. This book is beautiful, and even without muppets, it carries the quality of storytelling you can expect from Henson.

The audience Jim Henson’s lost screen play, Tale of the Sand is going to be fans of the comic book, mood capturing art work of Ramon Perez and the diehard “I must have it all” Jim Henson fan. The content is just adult enough that parents may not want it for their kids. Absent those few images, the mostly likely response from a youngster, though maybe not a YA will be: “Huh?” Mine was only slightly better.

This is from a Jim Henson fan. One who even liked The Dark Crystal. I know him from his more adult oriented Great Bavog SNL sketches and do not expect him to write only for kiddies and be sponsored by numbers and letters.

Jim Henson’s lost screen play: Tale of Sand, has very good work by artist Jeffery Juhl and Ramon K. Perez and not much else. It could have been a decent film short but there is not enough here for a quarter of a full-length feature.

As an Art House film short it is from the school of surrealism and based on the notion that by telling the audience nothing, the audience can make of it anything. To me this is a surreal, minimalist allegory of life. Or something else, or nothing else. That much uncertainty speaks of an artist with a vision, but no not enough substance.

I loved this book. The writing and the visual storytelling is not typical and was fun to take in. There is very little dialog. Normally that would hurt a book but Ramon Perez's art fills that gap perfectly. If you are a fan of non-superhero books, and you are looking for something neat, give this a shot! Its incredibly well done.

This is an amazing sequential art book. There aren't a lot of word balloons, but the art tells the story by itself. Also the book is very well designed and put together. The quality of production is top notch. The whole package is mainly about the art, as it's a pretty quick story. But it's worth pouring over the art in the pages. You're not going to get the story from the words, but from the art. I'd recommend this more for art lovers than fans of wordy stories.

Not a bad book. I went in with high expectations. Thought I would be blown away. It's a good book. Just not a great book. If I recall, the pages were very thick. Very much a premium product, but perhaps not worthy of that treatment. If it's on sale, go for it.
