Jim Henson's Labyrinth: Coronation Vol. 1 Kindle & comiXology

4.9 4.9 out of 5 stars 559 ratings

Simon Spurrier (Godshaper, The Power of the Dark Crystal) and Daniel Bayliss (Jim Henson’s Storyteller: Dragons, Kennel Block Blues) present a magical look into the world of Jim Henson’s Labyrinth. Before Sarah braved the Labyrinth to save her brother, another young woman sought to save a young boy named Jareth from the clutches of the Goblins. Set in 18th-century Venice, Italy, Jim Henson’s Labyrinth: Coronation is a striking look into the history of the Labyrinth itself, and what happens to the little boys who don’t get rescued. This is the untold history of the Goblin King. Collects issues #1-4.

I’m a fan of “Labyrinth” and finding out about this story hooked me up immediately. I devoured the three volumes of these series, you just get so attached to the characters and want to know what happens next. I definitely recommend this to anyone who loved the Jim Henson movie!

I have always been a huge fan of the movie. At Wondercon last year, I made a beeline to the table that was selling the first comic with the exclusion variant cover. This is a collection of the first four comics, in hardback, which makes it super easy to store. The story is a mixture of the events from the movie and a look back into the past. The colors are vibrant and bring alive the story as we see the characters that we know, and those that are new to us. This is not a retelling, this is a whole new addition to the Labyrinth world and it will leave you wanting more in this look back into the past.

The illustrations are clean, vibrant and eye-catching. They are the perfect companion to the story. All of the covers and variants of the first four comics are also collected in this book.

Spurrier is amazing. He channel's Bowie for a perfect Jareth, the story is very engaging so far. If you haven't checked out Spurrier's other works, you're missing out. I hate 'tie-ins' and such, so I was apprehensive even though I loved Spurrier's creator owned works. But with Hellblazer I grew a bit more confident, and I liked this far more than his take on John Constantine. I'll review the other books. in Spurrier's run on Labyrinth soon. But I'm more than pleased by his take here . . .

Thought this was a great and lovingly-made retelling of the Labyrinth!

I love the way the backstory of Jareth is interwoven with scenes we know and love from the movie.

The artistry is gorgeous. The only disconcerting thing for me is Jareth does not resemble David Bowie in the slightest, while Sarah and all other characters we have met before look spot-on.

Can’t wait to continue on!

I am obsessed with all things labyrinth! This is joining my collection. I wish there was more Sarah in the story, but the artwork is amazing and I did genuinely enjoy the story line.

I bought this for my sister for Christmas and she was overjoyed! I’m going to borrow it from her later, but from what I saw, the Art is simply amazing! My sister told me the story is “so freaking good” and that it’s a “must-read” for Labyrinth lovers!

I read the three prequel volumes after finishing the spinoff “After the Spell” collection. I am reviewing all three in one review, with the understanding that they are all part of one story cycle encompassing 12 parts in three volumes...

This was an interesting and illuminating prequel to the Labyrinth series, and tells the story about Jareth’s rise to become the goblin king. There are several new central characters, including a goblin knight, an animated rosebush that loves hugs, and a little worm that resembles the softspoken one when Jennifer first enters the Labyrinth in the film (but this little guy ends up having a much bigger role in the future of the Goblin Kingdom). In this we actually have a story that mirrors the film in a way that reframes and gives a platform to the events that are to come. There is a love story hinging on a betrayal, a character lost and wandering an unfair and confusing world against the clock, and of course, a massive war. Eventually the mirrors to the events of the film match up and it is clear to see where the goblin (and owl) king begin, embrace their anger and manipulation, and lead us to the world of Jareth and Jennifer.

The artwork is beautiful, and are a gorgeous echo in spirit and style to the original film. An enjoyable series as a whole if you are a fan of the original films. Not something I would go and read again, but a wholly fun adventure during the time I spent with it.

This is a perfect story for someone that needs more Labyrinth in their life. Jareth’s character gets more fleshed out for those interested in the mysterious king. A must have for any Labyrinth lover. Can’t wait for the second volume to be released.

5.0 out of 5 stars A worthy prequel/interquel to Labyrinth.

The books of Boom/Archaia are a treat.
They are truly capturing the spirit of the late Jim Henson's work.
I enjoyed already the works from the Dark Crystal line of books, they have been wonderful.
The same ist to be said about Labyrinth: Coronation. The only thing, I would have likey a little bit more likeness of the Goblin King to David Bowie, at least the artists could have given attention to the different eyecoloring of Mr Bowie.
But that is me complaining on elevated niveau. The art is, also like in the Dark Crystal line, very unique and striking.
And the story is interestingly settled as flashbacks during the story of the original movie.
Get it, read it, enjoy it. Recommended.
This review also goes for Volumes 2 & 3.

5.0 out of 5 stars Scénario encore plus meilleur que le film
Reviewed in France on November 7, 2020
