JOE HARRIS is the writer of original comics and graphic novels such as the demonic rock ‘n’ roll thrill ride, ROCKSTARS, and the sci-fi adventure series, GREAT PACIFIC and SNOWFALL (Image Comics); along with the supernatural thrillers, GHOST PROJEKT and SPONTANEOUS, and the children’s fantasy, WARS IN TOYLAND (Oni Press); and the ghostly journey into the Fukushima nuclear exclusion zone, DISASTER INC. (AfterShock). As a young creator at Marvel Comics, Joe launched the cult-classic Spider-Man spinoff, SLINGERS and the BISHOP: THE LAST X-MAN series. Recognized for writing the long-running, hit comics continuation of Agents Mulder and Scully’s paranormal investigations into THE X-FILES to the enjoyment of fans around the world, THE X-FILES: COLD CASES—an audio adaptation featuring the voices of David Duchovny, Gillian Anderson and the entire television cast—were released by Audible to chart-topping success and multiple Audie Awards nominations. A sequel, THE X-FILES: STOLEN LIVES was released soon after.

A horror screenwriter and filmmaker, Harris conceived and co-wrote DARKNESS FALLS for Sony Pictures, along with the farcical political slasher movie, THE TRIPPER for FOX. In 2018, he co-wrote the live-action web series, NINJAK VS. THE VALIANT UNIVERSE (Valiant Entertainment).

SURVIVING NUCLEAR ATTACK, a paranoid sci-fi thriller written by Joe, was serialized as part of John Carpenter’s Tales of Science Fiction (Storm King) in 2019. The grisly Viking werewolf saga, SUN EATER—created by Dylan Sprouse and written by Sprouse & Joe Harris—will be published by Heavy Metal in 2020/2021.

A native New Yorker, Joe lives in Manhattan.

This particular comic is a very historical one for me. It is the marking of my very first encounter with the character of Jonathan Crane, or the Scarecrow. I remember hanging out at the library several years ago skimming the comics, looking for something new to catch my eye, when I came acrossed the comic bind up Joker's Asylum. Being a big Joker fan at the time (though he wasen't my favorite villain, mind), I lept on it and dragged the book back home with a few other goodies. Unfortunately, the book did not have a particularly impressive collection of tales. There were some pretty funny bits in the stories, one or two fairly memorable, but I remember being fairly bored with the majorty of the book. That is-until I cam acrossed this little story.

The first thing to note is the art. It is very unconventional for DC comics and unlike anything you'd likely find in any other serial. It reminds me alot of the old progressive commercials with the pink haired super spy. The style is minimal but beautiful. I am not sure how well it suits the particular tale or the character at hand, but it's refreshing nonetheless.

Now the reason I am all over this comic, and Scarecrow still to this day, is the story. I LOVE this story. Obviously it isn't going to beat anything like The Killing Joke or The Long Halloween with it's exceedingly short story space, but for the room it takes up, it uses it optimally. I am all over a good tale of the bullied kid's revenge, and I especially enjoy the interpretations of Crow being a dark knight for the protagonist (or at least attempting to be). As a bullied child myself, this was something that touched a part of me deeply. For that, this will always be one of my favorites.

This great story by Joe Harris is just what The Batman mythos needed! A tale that deals with the premise of bullying and revenge. The art by Juan Doe is superb and really draws you into the premise of consequence. I highly recommend this gem.
