Judge Dredd: Year One is a thrilling adventure story pitting Dredd against a novel new foe. The illustrations are top notch and Matt Smith captures the feel of his world quite well.
The problem is there's nothing really new here. Rookie Judge Dredd is no different from the Dredd we've seen for years, he's even drawn the same, and the story could have happened at any point in his career. There's no exploration of what molded him into Mega City One's greatest judge, little sign of his brother Rico, nothing to mark this as a 'Year One' story other than a few lines about him being a rookie.
And then to make matters worse the story wastes time with a parallel world but never uses it to shed any light on Dredd's character.
It's a find story, but really it's just a run of the mill Dredd story with nothing really memorable.

My only criticism would be the ending, as it does come across as underdeveloped.
If you like Dredd, give it a go

As the name implies, this story is set within the first year of Joe Dredd being a full-eagle Street Judge; he's only been out of the academy for a year and we pick up our story at the end of his first year.
Some of the critique for this piece is that the Dredd in this story is not dissimilar to the older, more current Dredd that graces the pages of 2000AD/Rebellion.
It's seen that Dredd of Year One and current Dredd are the same; they draw their Lawgiver and shoot perps, the ones that aren't shot are arrested and packed off to the Cubes. What's the difference?
However, I did see a noticeable difference. For the purpose of this review, Year One Dredd shall be referred to as Joe-Joe, and current Dredd shall be simply: Old Dredd.
It becomes arrant very quickly that this story is about psychics. When Joe-Joe realises that the case he's on is rooted in mumbo-jumbo psychic powers he asks to be transferred to another, more normal case. When was the last time you heard Old Dredd ask for a reassignment because he thought he couldn't really deal with a case?
Joe-Joe is very wary of the Psi-Div and anything to do with psyhics in this story, it's pretty much given that Old-Dredd is accepting of Psi-Div and their methods, if not still a bit wary of all Psis.
Joe-Joe is constantly questioned by his peers, they all call him "young" and double guess him. Old Dredd commands instant respect.
While in the current stories Old Dredd is starting to question his place within the Justice System and even how MC-1 treats mutants, Joe-Joe is happy to draw down on kids without hesitation. Joe-Joe is quick to draw and shoot and he makes very dangerous and reckless decisions in our story, something he himself chastises himself for later.
Joe-Joe mentions a few times that, "he's no rookie," maybe to remind himself more than anything.
I personally see Joe-Joe as a brand new, black and white product that is thrown into a world of grey. As I say, I saw a difference in Joe-Joe and Old Dredd, and I liked the contrast.
In reference to story, I thought the story was brilliant. It really hooked me and I wanted to burn through it to get to the end.
The artwork is lovely and the whole story is a treat to read.
My advise is give it a go and make your own mind up.
