Given his character through the years it's been established that Jughead Jones has a big appetite for burgers but what if there was a reason? In this iteration Jughead is descendant of lycanthropy (werewolves in popular culture) and has been going on a murdering spree unknown to him being new to the process.
Some characters are killed off in horrific ways but I found that I couldn't look away that squeaky clean Archie comic characters getting buthered in this fashion.
Some character mythos are altered, namely, resident girl next door Betty Cooper as she's the de facto "protag" in a way when she is descendant of hunters and brutally kicks Jug's butt when she finds out.
Will this have some happy ending? Given it's a one-shot it will leave you wanting more. I actually hope Archie Horror decides to strike and make a series out of this as this takes well-known characters in different ways just like AWA (Afterlife with Archie) and CAOS (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina).
It was an awesome read!
The version of Betty in this comic is a horrible person and a disgusting excuse for a 'friend' who was only ever close to Archie and Jug so she could stalk Jughead and kill him if he transformed into a werewolf. No warning him, no trying to help him, nothing a real friend would do: she just skips right to trying to kill him.
Likewise, seeing Archie be a loyal friend to Jug, defending him and pushing for a cure, is a nice breath of fresh air after the annoying drama between them in season two Riverdale. I was all for it when I first read this installment. Hell, I loved it so much that I purchased the next few issues as soon as they became available, expecting them to be a great horror story.
In retrospect, I'm not sure I love it as much anymore. I'm no longer holding it in parallel to Riverdale - which, considering it's the classic take with white Lodges and old lady Grundy, it was never meant to be in the first place - and on it's own, I don't know if I like the story as much. It has quite a few logic gaps and weird bits, especially the way Archie is able to wiki a potential cure yet lifelong hunter Betty doesn't know it. And the way Jug is blamed when he has literally no control over changing into a werewolf.
It's not bad and I don't suddenly dislike it, but I do think this is more of a 3.5 star graphic novel, rounded up to 4 stars. (Originally, I rated it a solid 5.)
Basically a fun take on an old subject with the wholesome teens taking on the horror genre.
I enjoyed it.
