Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 7 Up—Mild-mannered Chicagoland teen Angel Tomassini is not what you'd call lucky. His father, who's in the highly competitive fish market, has made some enemies and wants to protect his son, so Angel has his own driver, Dan. But Angel is a bully magnet and has zero luck with the ladies, especially with one girl in particular, Lisa. His luck begins to turn around, then upside down, when he learns that his father's business is actually a front for the mob and Dan is from an ancient line of shape-shifters and can turn into a tiger. And Angel, despite his lack of prowess in other areas, seems to possess some of these powers. As he trains with Dan and learns the ancient Zodiac-based magic, the teen resolves to use his newfound powers to take down the mob and try to score a date with Lisa. Tinged with magic and heavy on the violence, this is a classic superhero origin story in its truest form, elevated by complex ancient magic and government conspiracies. While Ozenam and Jurion weave a complex and often hard-to-follow web, superhero devotees will joyfully untangle it. The illustrations have an anime feel, with dynamic action filling the frames of the comic's many fight scenes. The tiger transformations are particularly stunning. VERDICT This gorgeous work will appeal mostly to die-hard superhero fans.—Anna Murphy, Berkeley Carroll School, Brooklyn, NY

The first volume start out slow but then picks up. Had me clamoring for more.

A complex storyline that grows more confusing as the stakes are raised higher and higher for the main characters. All together the artwork is solid and the characters are enjoyable to read. The failure of this story is the fact that it is overly complicated as the storyline progress and more and more characters, organizations, groups, and powers are introduced which leave the reader struggling to keep everything straight. But despite the flaws in the story line I crave more of the story and wish to continue reading.

I didn't expect much going into Klaw. I've been burned by loving a cover a few too many times. But woah, this was one heck of a rich mythos to dive into and I will be devouring more volumes as they arrive. Not only is the story great, the art is beautiful. If you dig shapeshifters or crime family dramas be sure and pick this one up.

So great! I picked up it with just the thought of "it's a dude who turns into a tiger!" it's so much more than that. There's such a deep detailed story that goes through it. I won't spoil anything but I can't wait for The 2nd Cycle specially after that conclusion! The art is gorgeous! Simplistic at times and then nicely detailed at other times and it's so pleasing to look at. I wish I had more things to say other than "it's amazing everyone should read it!"

Early review cause I got it through my local comic book store rather than amazon.

I just realized this novel's publication date was yesterday and since I've finally read it [yesterday because the pdf's deadline was up] and I can't decide whether I liked it or not.

The story is split into three parts, well it actually does contain 3 issues of the novel, so that's logical. The first one deals with the kid finding out he actually has some pretty cool shape-shifting power. The second moves on to him learning to use it and giving him a reason to do so. And the last one moves on few years ahead when Ange is already grown up and trained and has to deal with some tough things going on in his home city.

As much as I enjoyed the first two parts I felt the third one was too rushed. Pity, because it had a good start and I was hoping for so much more. It's like all the ideas came together and were stuck up with fast-drying glue like the last Batman movie... oh sorry, I didn't mean to say that... Who am I kidding, of course, I did :D.

Anyway, as much as I'd like to see a bit more of a back story of what happened in the last part, I still enjoyed reading it. There was plenty of action going on, the characters moved on with their lives.

I really like the graphic style. Detailed, yet with clear distinction of what you need to see. Lovely drawn and colorful. The action scenes are lively and clear, so you won't get lost in who's who.

There are some plot twists in this story that I did not see coming. It's always good to read something unpredictable, see the unexpected. That's what made the story feel fresh and what made me enjoy it. That's why I wanted to give it a higher rating, but I simply can't after looking at the whole picture.

Oh, and the idea with Chinese-zodiac animals being the dizhi was quite interesting. I admit, I can't see a pig being a fighter, but it was curious.

Would I recommend it? I'd say - give it a try. This story combines some mafia wars, some supernatural shape-shifting powers, and a bit of superhero vigilante battles. It's curious, even if a little rushed at some points.

I received this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Has Some flaws, but still a good read.

I received a copy of Klaw from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you!

I picked this one up and nearly forgot about it! It had caught my eye because of the concept, but I didn't really know what to expect. After finishing it, I learned that the artist is praised for his style, and while I did think it was gorgeous art, the story is what I focused on when reading.

Klaw is about Angel, a young boy who comes from a wealthy family and is bullied at school. He even has his own driver/bodyguard. He has a massive crush on a girl, and when her boyfriend is killed, seemingly by a giant tiger, he begins to suspect himself.

This graphic novel is split into three parts, and each is totally different from the last. While they all follow the same character, they seem to shift tones and genres. The first one is somewhat of an origin/coming of age story, the second is a spy-thriller/climax of an origin, and the third is a superhero drama of sorts.

The first two parts of the graphic novel I was totally behind. I enjoyed watching the character grow and mature and learn about what was happening to him and going on in general. It's a lot for him to take in, but I think he does a good job of it. Some parts of the pacing were rushed, but it felt fine in the context of the story. There are some twists, too, that caught me off guard, and some that had me face palming when Angel didn't figure them out as quickly as I did. It was the third part, though, that really rubbed me the wrong way. Everything set up in the first two sections seem useless after several years of time jump. The characters seem to go off character and all that maturing and growing that happened? Where it went I don't know. Suddenly the pace was ridiculous and as a reader I felt like I had to play catchup because I had no idea what was motivating anyone anymore. And that ending? It didn't make any sense to me and has pushed me far from trying another volume any time in the future.

I don't mean to speak bad of it, because I was thoroughly enjoying the first two parts! Never before has a fight between a Rooster and a Tiger been so interesting! But the shift that happens in part three is ridiculous and almost seems like someone completely different wrote it. I was glancing through reviews on Goodreads, to see if I was the only one who felt this way, and wasn't surprised when the vast majority of reviewers were also upset by the change.

If it sounds interesting, I recommend picking this up from your library. Hopefully others will enjoy it much more than I did.
