About the author

Simon "Si" Spurrier writes novels and comics.
His work in the latter field stretches from award winning creator-owned books such as 'The Spire', 'Coda' and 'Angelic' to projects in the U.S. mainstream like 'Hellblazer', 'The Dreaming' and 'X-Men'. He and his works have been nominated for Eisner Awards multiple times.
His prose works range from the beatnik neurosis-noir of 'Contract' ("A tour de force" - The Times) to the occult whodunnit 'A Serpent Uncoiled' ("Gargantuan literary flourishes" - The Truth About Books). His experimental e-novella 'Unusual Concentrations' was shortlisted for the Shirley Jackson Awards.
He lives in Margate, UK.

It's a must read!
One odd thing about this is that the first issue or two had the worst artwork that I've seen. X-Men Legacy's artwork prior to this fit it perfectly, and flowed with the story itself. This...was noticeably different and was too much of an eyesore that it was distracting from the story. Fortunately, it corrects itself and looks like what it consistently has been after that. It's one of two issues that I do have with the book... the other one being the pacing. Despite being drawn out, I feel like in places this is where the writing was the weakest despite having the most to say and actually felt rushed in a couple of areas. Basically, he spent too much time on some subjects and could've used it elsewhere. X-Men Legacy does have a message and, while woven more intricately in the story in the other volumes, I feel like it was too bluntly stated in one area and he really didn't combine it with the story at all. Fortunately, this corrects itself for the finale which is just stunning.
While the above is what's bad about X-Men Legacy Volume 4, the good is still mostly there. David and Ruth are still the characters they've been developed to be, and we do get to see their romance reach its zenith. There is still wit and humor in their interactions with other characters, though a little bit less due to the story wrapping up and having to deal with other things in-story and after the end I still enjoyed it.
In the end, I can't help but feel that Legion was a perfect choice for a book entitled X-men Legacy. He's not a fan favorite...or, at least, wasn't. From what I can tell he's grown his fan base, which I think is good for a company to do. They've taken a character so few people liked and made a great series out of him, instead of taking people (self included) who'd shell out money for any character that guarantees money regardless of the quality of the comic. That takes talent, and as far as I know, it's unprecedented. I'm interested to see what Marvel will do next with the character... hopefully not anything too soon because of that ending. The ending of David's story is something that makes sense yet comes so far out of left-field that it might stun you. It's not a sad story, but it's not a happy one either. They'll drag him back like they always do, and I hope they keep his characterization and Ruth's too.
It's not as great as issues 7-18 (Volumes 2 and 3) but it's not bad either. I honestly thought that the middle was a chore to get through and it wasn't interesting enough to hold my attention on its own; but, it concluded strongly and appropriately. It's been a great series throughout and overall it must've been hard to end it, so while I think it's actually less than 4 star material it's high enough to evade a 3 star rating. Think 3.6 stars, and worth a buy if you've been following the story.
Yes, it does break apart at times, gets lost in itself, drags in parts, it isn't perfect... but give me writing that attempts the epic, and falls a short on polish, and i will call it for what it is:
A masterpiece
I've been mostly out of comics for a few years and am getting back in. X-Men is one series I'm still playing catch up on and reading this seemed the ideal way to get back in tune with Legion as a character. The story starts off pretty strong and I like the way David's struggle to control his powers is played like a person struggling to learn to live with a mental disorder. It's heartfelt and honest which I enjoyed. I also found this book to have one of the better takes on Blindfold/Destiny that I've seen in recent years.
On the downside, somewhere along the line David picked up a Scottish accent that doesn't really mesh with his previous appearances. Additionally, I found the latter part of the story to be confusing and generally one of those things that makes anyone trying to make sense of X-Men continuity want to rip their hair out. Also, I can't say as I cared for the artists for this story. Neither did anything really wrong. Their styles simply weren't to my taste.
All in all, unless you're a big Legion fan, this one can be skipped.
