We happened upon this book in our local bookstore, and it is a wonderfully illustrated read-aloud or read-alone book for kids 4-7. It blends a story of two small friends walking through the forest with factual information about the animals they encounter. The black-and-white panels show a small dog and squirrel with a sweet friendship and some sweet, funny, and mildly suspenseful moments. Behind the black-and-white panels are beautifully illustrated depictions of the animals they come across as they try to find their way through the forest.
The text is simple and appropriate for early readers, possibly with some help to read the animal names. I recommend it as a gift for kids who like graphic novels, or who like learning about nature, or both!
