Lucifer (2015-2017) Vol. 3: Blood in the Streets Kindle & comiXology

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 164 ratings

He’s faced down God Himself, and lived (and died, and lived again) to tell the tale. Now Lucifer Morningstar, the most irresistible antihero in all of Creation, is free to turn the final page on his past and begin a brand-new chapter in his legendarily eventful life.

But before he can start booking retirement cruises, there’s still one small matter that requires his attention: an all-powerful entity has usurped his deceased Father’s place in Heaven and is preparing to extinguish every last vestige of free will throughout the universe.

The Lightbringer has always been the contrary type, and he’s not about to change his ways for anyone—or anything—just because they occupy the Throne of Light. And while the former Lord of Hell now rules only within the boundaries of his nightclub, Ex Lux, he still has powerful allies and devoted enemies—all of whom are ripe for manipulation.

Together, this motley militia is poised to take their fight from the heights of the Silver City to the depths of the Inferno. Against them stand multiple armies of angels, demons, and every dreaded thing imaginable that lies between them. Can Lucifer overcome their onslaught and keep his club, his city, and his indomitable independence intact? Or, after countless millennia, has the Devil’s tab finally come due?

Find out in LUCIFER VOL. 3: BLOOD IN THE STREETS—the shocking conclusion to the newest saga of the Fallen One from the acclaimed creative team of Richard Kadrey, Lee Garbett, Antonio Fabela, Holly Black, Marco Rudy and Ben Templesmith, collecting issues #13-19 of the signature VERTIGO series.

What can you say about God's favorite angel who likes to have a little too much fun with those silly humans? Take a look and see for yourself. Its a bunch of laughs. :)

Posing and snappy patter isn't really writing. It certainly doesn't come close to the subtlety of Carey's earlier work on the title. The characters could have been drawn from a template, just chose blonde or brunette. Humans should come in all shapes and sizes. Takes all kinds to make a world. Maybe this is supposed to pass for Gen Z wit? Got tedious by the end.

as lucifer fanfiction goes, i've read better.

holly black is given an unenviable task-- pick up after a definitive series with a very definite ending for the title character. i do like the idea of lucifer forced to confront the emotional fallout of leaving creation, and in theory i'd love nothing more than to see lucifer perhaps edged further towards acknowledging how much he cares for mazikeen and elaine. i disagree strongly with some of her characterization choices, but i can see where and why she would make those decisions. (i maintain that elaine would /never/, but sure. we can go with it.) the sticking point here, however, is that she just isn't good at the medium. i'm not familiar with her other work-- she may be a fine YA author in her own right, i couldn't speak to her abilities one way or another, but the pacing lacks cohesion, thumbnail sketches of what might be an interesting story if told competently, and the dialogue rings painfully false in many, if not most, instances.

there are other (many other!) nits i could pick with the huge swings in characterization and straight up contradicting stated plot points in the carey/gross run, but the main issue is that this just falls flat. it's a shame, because there are a few decent concepts here that i wouldn't mind seeing in the hands of a skilled comics writer, and the art is excellent throughout, but you're better off rereading the original run. overall, a pale imitation of something better.

I bought it hoping to see Sandman Slim in the Comic Book! It's got the same setting, and the same Lucifer that's in all those awesome Richard Kadrey books... Nooo Sandman Slim though... Three stars for the disappointment even if it is an awesome book. If you're a Lucie-fur fan though you're in luck because this is straight from the man himself Richard Kadrey!

Not as good as the last collection, not even close... here they simply talk too much. Original series was formal and stoic, this one seemed like it was written by teenagers...

A fitting end to the follow ups to Mike Carey's "Lucifer", itself a spin off from Mr Gaiman's "Sandman".

I'd been very wary about this whole enterprise. Often these things are better left very much alone, and putting out sequels that trade on the name just sullies the original. This one was not just a reasonably fresh take, but was obviously done with love and care by the author and illustrator.
