About the Author

Writer Mike Carey, best known for his work on Vertigo's Lucifer and Hellblazer, has made his mark in comics.  Born in Liverpool, England, Carey worked as a teacher for fifteen years before gaining regular work writing for several independent companies. In 1999 he wrote the Sandman spinoff miniseries The Sandman Presents: Lucifer.  This led to the Lucifer solo title which earned him a nomination for the 2001 Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards - Best Writer. His additional Vertigo projects have included Faker, Crossing Midnight and The Unwritten. Beyond DC, Carey was also recognized for his work on Marvel's X-Men titles.  He makes his home in London with his wife, Lin, and his children, Davey, Ben and Louise.

Mike Carey got into writing through comic books, where his horror/fantasy series Lucifer garnered numerous international awards and was nominated for five Eisners. From there he moved into novels and screenplays, while still maintaining a presence in the comics world (he is currently writing two of Marvel's flagship titles, X-Men and Ultimate Fantastic Four). His movie Frost Flowers, an erotic ghost story, is currently in production with Hadaly/Bluestar Pictures. He lives in London, England, about as far as you can get from the centre of the city and still have access to the London Underground train network. His wife, Linda, writes fantasy for young readers under the pseudonym A.J. Lake. They have three children and an implausibly beautiful cat.

These days it's rare to find a comic book series that can rival the quality displayed by writers such as Frank Miller or Alan Moore. Fortunately Mike Carey has been putting out some of the best writing I've ever had the pleasure of reading, through Lucifer. My all-time favorite series is Sandman, so I was immediately drawn to this series. The depth to the stories, the gorgeous art, and the wonderfully complex characters originally introduced in Neil Gaiman's Sandman are all here to be enjoyed. If you are looking at this series for the first time please check out volume 1 as it HAS to be read in order.

Volume 3 picks up the threads left over from the previous volumes and brings some of them to a satisfying conclusion. I won't say much here, in order to avoid spoilers, but I will say the story moves at a faster pace compared to the previous volumes and I found myself unable to put this one down. Their is also a very large part of the volume that follows Maziken and it's awesome (I just love that Mike Carey has dedicated so much time to her character development). My only complaint, and it's a small one, was a small story towards the end that dragged on a bit but other than that this is the best Lucifer volume yet!

I recently decided to fill out my set of the Lucifer stories, and I love the fact that we have these editions: they are a good price, well bound, colorfully printed on good paper...and most importantly, the stories Mike Carey has put together to continue Lucifer's tale after Neil Gaiman's "Sandman" stories is executed with the same degree of skill and cleverness. Art quality can vary across the tales, but overall it is somewhat better than some of the work in Volume 2. The stories themselves take us to hell and back and many places in between. It seems to be a common theme that Lucifer will set the stage, events will draw out the characters, and eventually all the side stories draw together. I don't want to spoil this for you, but to paint a brief picture, we see the mundane world mix with fantastic creatures, fantasy quests across multiple mythologies, and a surprisingly deep conversation between Lucifer and The Creator that deeply explores divine purpose and free will. Lucifer is not a "good guy", and his motivations are his own--but often it is his reasoning that tends to turn the reader's perspective in new directions. These aren't stories for children. The content is explicitly violent and sexual, and liberties are taken with multiple religions (Christianity of course being front and center). For adults with an open mind, the Lucifer series of books is brilliant illustrated narrative, and highly recommended to those familiar with the DC Vertigo universe and looking to explore a bit further.

I've been reading Lucifer mostly because of the TV series. I like it. I haven't read comic books in a while so its a nice change. The story from the Lucifer TV series and the comic books are wildly different so there's not much story line conflict to rectify. Good read.

Great book exploring the real essence of what devil is: elegant, cunning, manipulative, cold... But also warm and meaning to serve justice. If you try to put it to words, you spoil it. One has to read and get a "feel of it".

Lucifer is a complex character as he was once an archangel and the brightest star in heaven but now the ruler over the most condemned characters in hell. The character depiction in this book does his background fullest justice. I still prefer the character exploration in book 1 though. It has the BEST essence of real devil depicted in such a classy way. Please read the first book as well.

this is one of my favorite comics/graphic novels ever, the story portrays both satan god and many other characters in different lights and gives good aspect and character development to both. although lucifer in the show is a bit more snarky and funny when this version in the book he almost seems sad. in a way tired. he can be serious at times and a bit jokingly at others while I won't spoil anything in it God does show up someone as a character in it and I have to say I never like him normally in stories that are bible licey themed but they do it right they don't make him seem like a total ass but give him some humanistic qualities as well. all and all I am going to definitely buy the rest of the books and then work my way onto sandman, ALL AND ALL I​ say have sympathy for the devil in this one.

The main story line is as good as ever, turning on such themes as the price of always keeping your word. What Lucifer says he'll do, he does, but fidelity has a way of turning demonic in his hands. The stories can be wickedly funny at times, with an imp pausing at its task of yanking spikes out of a tortured comrade to mutter "Crazy world. Where do dead angels get galvanized six-inch?" But I found the most moving of them to be one that hardly involves the title character, "Bearing Gifts," the richly paradoxical tale of a kind, religious Muslim immigrant whose store has a few customers who aren't quite what they seem (one of them the imp mentioned above, who is there to buy a can of baby sweet corn for the Archangel Michael). He finds himself dragged into the infernal regions on a mission of mercy with only his faith as a guide, sure that God would not send him to Hell for no reason, and emerges with honor and belief triumphant.

C'est une joie totale que de se lancer dans la lectures des aventures du Prince des Enfers. Loin des cliches habituels sur ce personnage, Vertigo propose aux lecteurs une approche "humaine" d'un des Anges Dechus. On retrouve les qualites presentes dans Sandman, d'ou ce personnage est issu. Il n'y a pas d'exces, tout comme il n'y a pas forcement de douceur dans certaines situations.

Une agreable lecture, somme toute. Excellente edition en softcover (pourquoi pas de version Deluxe??? o_O ).
