As expected, the story centers on a version of Red Riding Hood, but as a werewolf hunter and with a ton of regrets. I’m not qualified to critique the art, so I won't. Suffice to say, it looked good to me.
I do feel qualified to comment on general elements of story. I like Lucy Claire, as rough and tumble and broken as she is. Those are the traits that make her so appealing. I like the fact that the cast is a diverse one. The cast of characters and the story itself relies on some familiar stereotypes though. I don’t think it's necessarily a crime to rely on some stereotypes — the big, threatening guy with a big heart, the sarcastic one, the one who always sees the bright side, the mysterious and wise mentor. Even some of the dialogue is cliched, where Upchurch even recognizes it and throws in a disclaimer where the characters call each other out for using it. Those elements bring enough familiarity to characters to make them both memorable and identifiable. Maybe I wish it was a little less so, but it's fine.
The story itself moves. There's plenty of bloody action from the start. But this is more than a comic about Riding Hood kicking werewolf butt. I like the angle about Claire dealing with the demons of the past, of seeking forgiveness for what she did to her family. It’s veiled enough to carry through to the end of this set of chapters, and it works.
But there is more than just werewolves going on here. There are ghosts and witchcraft and black magic of sorts that complicates the simpler story. It was on the edge of being too much for me. Or maybe too much too soon.
But I'm also not a regular graphic novel reader, so maybe this is the norm. Either way, I was entertained. I'm glad I checked it out. I found a digital copy of this graphic novel at my local library.
