Marvel has finally decided to do right by the long suffering Fantastic Four (half of whom have been MIA since the end of Secret Wars) and the road towards a series revival begins here with the return of classic old school Marvel title "Marvel Two in One." Separated by the long since disbanded FF (with Reed and Sue Richards missing along with their children), Ben Grimm and Johnny Storm have mostly been wandering about the Marvel universe usually popping up as side characters in other books (such as Johnny's random romance with Inhuman queen Medusa) but without any real story of their own. Now they are brought back together by Dr. Doom of all people (still trying to fill Iron Man's shoes as a good guy) who locates Reed's living will and his plea to the pair of friends to not let the FF's dream die. The pair join up with a mysterious scientist to use Reed's devices to travel the multiverse and continue the team's legacy of exploration. However, to get Johnny along for the ride Ben lies and claims that Reed and Sue are still alive out in the multiverse. This false hope is driving the pair to travel from parallel universe to parallel universe to find their counterparts... and with their powers on the fritz time is running out. All in all an amazing book that does right by two classic characters and actually help justify the recent Dr. Doom as a hero story arc (his frequent appearances almost make him a full fledged member of the team at this point).

The Fantastic Four have been gone for 3 years. Of course, at the time of this writing, Marvel’s First Family have just returned to shelves in a new ongoing, but it’s been a long time and they’ve been sorely missed. As part of the “Marvel Legacy” branding that began Fall 2017, Chip Zdarsky and Jim Cheung were tasked with creating a series that would begin the year-long wait to the return of the FF.

Boy, did they hit it out of the park.

Invoking the classic “Marvel Two-In-One” series, which teamed up the Ever-Lovin’ Thing with a different hero each issue, Zdarsky and Cheung deliver an exciting and emotional series. Johnny Storm and Ben Grimm- the Human Torch and the Thing- take center stage in a mission to find the rest of the FF, who have been missing ever since they disappeared in Marvel’s 2015 “Secret Wars” crossover event. They’re lonely and longing to find their family, a desire that Zdarsky captures so painfully well. Along for the “fantastic” adventure is longtime villain Doctor Doom, who’s taken a more heroic turn recently (see “Infamous Iron Man” for more). The dynamic between Doom, Ben, and Johnny is a complete delight, and oddly comforting to see how they deal with the loss of the Richards’ family.

On the art side of things, Cheung works on the first, second, and sixth issues, capturing emotion and bombastic action with the same incredible skill. Valerio Schiti works on the third, fourth, and fifth issues, injecting a more stylized and dynamic art style to the title. His designs for alternate heroes and worlds are a joy to see. Frank Martin handles the colors for the whole volume and does a remarkable job of balancing such a fun color palette, from the browns of Googam, son of Goom, to the flashy greens of Doom’s magic.

In short, if you’re a fan of the Fantastic Four, or even just exciting sci-fi stories, or even just great art, this volume cannot be missed.

I’m on my third read through of this collection. The writer and artist really seem to get the characters here; it’s too bad the second collection is so bad.

This volume reunites Ben and Johnny, the Thing and Human Torch of the title, setting off across the globe and then the multiverse in search of clues to the whereabouts of Reed and Sue and their two kids. The pair are joined by a good version of Victor Von Doom and a new character that provides science assist. The quest continues and is resolved (rather poorly, in my opinion) in the second volume.

A final note. Be careful ordering this from Amazon. They don’t know how to pack and ship comics. I received two damaged copies of this.

I greatly enjoyed the content of this trade, as a long-time FF fan. No problems there, and I'd give four stars for the story itself (if it were Jim Cheung art throughout, it'd easily be five stars).

Unfortunately, Marvel chose to use the inferior Quad Graphics printers to produce the book itself, and this is another example of their cover paper-stock curling back from the book. It's seemingly a problem that plagues many Quad-produced books, including the most recent Spider-Man Epic volume, "Venom." Fortunately, this trade doesn't seem to have the other Quad Graphics related problems such as mis-aligned covers, non-square cutting of pages, or paper stock actually changing in the middle of the book. (Wha-huh?)

Marvel, please stop using Quad Graphics to produce your trades. Your readers deserve better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exceeded my expectations and then some

I've never been much of a Fantastic Four fan over the years, but I decided to take a chance on this book. I was very pleasantly surprised! The story was interesting, the art was great. I hope they come out with a Volume 2 (the series does continue past these collected issues, but I haven't seen anything for pre-order yet). If you enjoyed Jonathan Hickman's "Secret Wars" series (the newest one, not the 1980's series... or the more recent weird Bendis one), this book picks up on some of the character storylines left off at the end of that. Recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not a Classic but entertaining

This book was billed as a classic story line, reflecting the work of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. Sadly, it falls far short of capturing the familial essence of the original and despite there being some "grand schemes" in there the fact is it lacks grandeur. In fact some of the plot devices just lack any credible explanation and that means the story ends up feeling rushed and somewhat unsatisfying. Don't get me wrong; it starts with promise and the art in issues 1,2 and 6 by Jim Cheung are a treat to behold but overall it lacks that magic. If you want to see the Fantastic Four at their best then grab a reprint of any issues between 42 and 90 - now those are classics !!!!!!
