If you only buy one book about Moon Knight, make it this one. Doug Moench ("Batman vs. Dracula") fashioned the character, first seen as the nemesis of Werewolf by Night, as a modern-day pulp-style hero in the tradition of Doc Savage, the Shadow and the Spider. Featuring wonderful art by Bill Sienkiewicz, the series was a supporting feature in Hulk Magazine. The pulp influence endows him with multiple alter-egos: millionaire Steven Grant, mercenary Marc Spector and cab driver Jake Lockley, giving him access to all levels of society This is before the character was turned into a mental case by novelist Charles Huston and his conversion to the Fist of Khonshu. He was more popular as the mentally unstable hero, but this writer preferred him as the resourceful champion of justice aided by his girlfriend, Marlene, and aide de camp, Frenchie. A stint in Steve Rogers' "Secret Avengers" saw him briefly regaining control over his mind until Brian Michael Bendis decided to add hallucinations involving Captain America, Daredevil and Spiderman to his crimefighting adventures. Give me the original!

Very early Moon Knight stories. If it was a regular monthly, you could do some world building but that's hard to do when the title comes out infrequently. I liked the villian Lupinar and think he could be a great rogue for MK if he gets fleshed out.

This series of stories was my introduction to Moon Knight in the 70's and 80's as he took the final pages of "Hulk" magazine. I remembered the essence of these stories, but it was in the re-reading that I realized why they stuck with me. This was Moon Knight beginning to figure out the whole split personality thing, and it was a gritty story (especially the part involving the axe murderer) that you didn't see in the regular comics back then. Reprinted here in glorious color and including the original covers from the Hulk magazine each story appeared in, you are given a real treat.

Though this story is very tame compared with the violence seen in today's comics, it should be noted this is better suited for a 18+ audience. No nudity, but it gets a little bloody at times. Also, this entire storyline appears in the "Essential Moon Knight Volume 1" paperback, which is cheaper than this and has more stories before and after it (though it's in black & white rather than in color like this collection). Unless you're a completest or just like this period of Moon Knight's history, you could buy the Essential book and get everything here except the color.

Breathtaking remastered printing compared to the old comics! This is a must have for new readers and old collectors that want to "upgrade" their comics collection or read it all over again.

I'm not much of a comic guy anymore so take this with a grain of salt. When I was a young teenager I loved Moon Knight, especially the ones illustrated by Bill Sienkiewicz. I bought this in a fit of nostalgia and was a bit let down. The stories seem outdated and immature, compared to the few comics I occasionally buy these days (mostly stuff with Mignola's writing and/or illustrations). I guess it shouldn't be surprising that books written in the 80s feel outdated, but this was a bit of a let down. Sienkiewicz' art was groundbreaking at the time, and is still pretty nice to look at, but for me Moon Knight has turned lackluster.
