4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 49 ratings

When a group of Nationalists use an ancient artifact to bring a villain from Arthurian myth back from the dead to gain power, ex-monster hunter Bridgette McGuire escapes her retirement home and pulls her unsuspecting grandson Duncan, a museum curator, into a world of magic and mysticism to defeat a legendary threat. Bestselling writer Kieron Gillen (The Wicked + The Divine, Star Wars) and Russ Manning Award-winning artist Dan Mora (Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Klaus) explore the mysteries of the past, the complicated truths of our history and the power of family to save the day…especially if that family has secret bunkers of ancient weapons and decades of experience hunting the greatest monsters in Britain’s history!

Kieron Gillen is a British writer, journalist and critic best known for his work in comics and his previous work in entertainment journalism.

Gillen's first graphic novel, PHONOGRAM (with artist/co-creator Jamie McKelvie), was published through IMAGE COMICS in 2006. Since then he's found work writing for MARVEL, AVATAR, BOOM, TOKYOPOP, DYNAMITE and more that don't spring to mind right now.

At Marvel, he's written runs on books including THE UNCANNY X-MEN, THOR, YOUNG AVENGERS, IRON MAN, JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY, STAR WARS, DOCTOR APHRA and DARTH VADER.

Books he's created included UBER, MERCURY HEAT and THREE, but is best known for the ongoing gods-as-popstar series with long time collaborators Jamie McKelvie and Matt Wilson THE WICKED + THE DIVINE launched to both huge critical and commercial success in 2014. It will conclude in 2019.

He is working on other things.

In his previous life as a critic, his work has appeared in WIRED, THE GUARDIAN, PLAYSTATION MAGAZINE UK, PC GAMER, EDGE and far too many others to count. In 2007 he was one of the founders of ROCKPAPERSHOTGUN.COM, what is now the world's premier PC-centric games blog.

He once played records for DMC to rap over.

Okay, now I am genuinely intrigued. Once and Future giving Supernatural season 1 vibe. Questing Beast to searching Arthur's scabbard, has me wanting more.

That's the reason for my mediocre rating. This territory has been heavily trod in children's books and movies so when I find something that attempts to retell it I shy away. I still enjoyed the art and I came to this series as a fan of Kieron Gillen. That part won't change and basically any artist or writer who has done work for Avatar Press is a good bet to keep on your "follow" list. Its just too bad there isn't more adult oriented content like Crossed out there. This one should rate as a teen product.

Very promising opening issue with a supernatural-fighting grandma, awkward date that promises future entanglement, and white supremacists collecting occult things they shouldn’t.

I am loving this series -- hooked from the very first page! The first issue sold out waaaay before it's release date, and they ended up doing three or four additional printings (which also sold out). This all happened before the first issue was actually published! I was fortunate enough to snag a first printing, but only because I pre-ordered this one in advance (yay newsletters!). After reading the synopsis, how could I not? However, all of the other covers are amazing, and I was tempted to buy one of each!

If you like fantasy or retellings, Once & Future is definitely worth reading! There's also a bad[beep] grandma barely blinking at monsters, which I thought was a wonderful addition to the story. Her grandson, Duncan, has no idea what's happening, or who his grandmother really is. Their relationship is realistic and also hilarious. She has no problem tossing a spear at him, or telling him to run and run fast, while she looks for something. I really like this duo, and I'm so happy they decided to make this an ongoing series instead of a mini. I cannot wait to see what adventures they go on!
