Kieron Gillen is a British writer, journalist and critic best known for his work in comics and his previous work in entertainment journalism.

Gillen's first graphic novel, PHONOGRAM (with artist/co-creator Jamie McKelvie), was published through IMAGE COMICS in 2006. Since then he's found work writing for MARVEL, AVATAR, BOOM, TOKYOPOP, DYNAMITE and more that don't spring to mind right now.

At Marvel, he's written runs on books including THE UNCANNY X-MEN, THOR, YOUNG AVENGERS, IRON MAN, JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY, STAR WARS, DOCTOR APHRA and DARTH VADER.

Books he's created included UBER, MERCURY HEAT and THREE, but is best known for the ongoing gods-as-popstar series with long time collaborators Jamie McKelvie and Matt Wilson THE WICKED + THE DIVINE launched to both huge critical and commercial success in 2014. It will conclude in 2019.

He is working on other things.

In his previous life as a critic, his work has appeared in WIRED, THE GUARDIAN, PLAYSTATION MAGAZINE UK, PC GAMER, EDGE and far too many others to count. In 2007 he was one of the founders of ROCKPAPERSHOTGUN.COM, what is now the world's premier PC-centric games blog.

He once played records for DMC to rap over.

Interesting story + beautiful art

This third installment bring more intrigue, more scheming, more plot twists and a story that continues to steamroller on keeping an eye on each realm in the search for the grail. Enjoy.

Once again Dan Mora's art is awesome! Like the characters, the story doesn't seem to fully understand where it is going. When the villains and heroes both are lost- the story will suffer.

As title. It's a fine adventure story about stories and the dangers thereof. Great words, beautiful art. This is volume three. Start with volume one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Players and pawns

I like the story, I like to concept, I like the characters the only reason I could not hive this five stars is a few of the action panels and dialogue is a bit too confusing.

I am glad that Rose got a bigger part in this book as she only really had a cameo on the last book. Gean is awesome as always. Duncan is great fighting monsters, but not so much in dealing with people in any level.

Merlin's plan is revealed and players lear their real roles. This is a great action packed volume after this everything has changed. All round great book. It includes an a4 cover gallery at the back. I can't wait for volume 4.

3.0 out of 5 stars He's big, he's green, but he's not the Hulk

If you liked volumes one and two... then you'll like this too. Same art still, same writing still. Rattles along still. It's still an entertaining read. The final panel promises what I'd hoped for back in volume one, something a bit weird. But I'll have to wait and see.

There's some political payoff here from what's been seeded in the first two volumes. No spoilers, except to say there is a certain turn of events that is quite satisfying.

The far right nationalists who nudge the plot along, in the way that pawns nudge a game of chess along, seem a little undercooked. Hard to say if Gillen just didn't want to get preachy which would slow things down. But it feels like, so far, a missed opportunity to dig a bit more into what makes them tick. The quest for the fantasy past (not this kind of fantasy) that these far right groups are always talking about. Returning to the "good old days". It is the basis for the book, but still feels a little superficial in how it's handled. I guess it comes back to this being an entertaining action adventure first and foremost. So fair enough.

I like some parts of the art more than others. Merlin and the decaying Arthur are great. I had thought there were hints of Kevin O'Neill in previous volumes, that gets stronger here. Right down to what seems a homage to O'Neill's Nemesis the Warlock. Most of the knights though are a bit too generic horror for me, or generic Marvel Thor muscley villains in armour. Merlin looks properly sinister, they look a bit silly.

Good to see a certain knight join the story. I'll be interested to see what Gillen does with him. It can't be worse than Simon Armitage's translation of his poem. Armitage clearly didn't understand the original poem at all, well not beyond the literal anyway. Hopefully Gillen's dug a little deeper.
