Road of Bones Kindle & comiXology

Horror, history, and Russian folklore collide in this brutal survival tale, where the worst prison in the world is merely the gateway to even darker terrors. In 1953, the Siberian Gulag of Kolyma is hell on Earth–which is why Roman Morozov leaps at the chance to escape it. But even if they make it out, Roman and his fellow escapees still have hundreds of miles of frozen tundra between them and freedom. With the help of a mysterious being straight out of his childhood fairy tale stories, Roman just might make it–or is the being simply a manifestation of the brutal circumstances driving him insane?

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Road of Bones is a well-oiled machine, running on tension and terror, stripped-down to its core. Don't let the lack of bulleted text fool you: Road of Bones is one of the best horror comics of the year, with storytelling so finely honed, it's deadly, and an ending that feels earned and satisfying. " —Comic Book Yeti

"Rich Douek's rocket ship is going right to the moon, he's become the master of horror comics." —The Word Bros

“This is the kind of terror that gets under your skin, giving you an uneasy feeling that will stay with you for some time. It will freak you right out.” —Horror DNA

“Road of Bones is an exercise in bleakness, the sheer uncaring nature of the universe writ small on two desperate men whose only crime is the will to survive.” —Major Spoilers

"Survival horror, chilling thriller, superbly tense writing, artwork from one of the best comic book illustrators working at the moment.”
—Big Comic Page

"Road of Bones is, for me, a perfect isolation thriller/horror series that slowly builds a feeling of tension, dread, and claustrophobia, panel after panel, all the way to the end. Rich Douek has been a new discovery for me this year and I can honestly say that I’ve been blown away by just how good his writing is. This is a relatively short series at just four issues, but I was gripped from start to finish in a story that is as terrifying for what is not on the page as what is. The final payoff in this series is glorious." —Big Comic Page

This was well written and artfully illustrated. You will not regret reading this. Creepy. Creepy story and creepy ending that has you rethink everything you read.

We've forgotten why communism is evil, and this gripping tale shakes loose some remnant of those terrible history lessons, but still doesn't answer why we never learn them. Always somebody's boot on your neck...

The story feels real and the horror is elevated by the fact that so much of the violence has no obvious supernatural connection. The writing is compelling and the art captures the themes of desperation in ways that remove the need for any exposition.

So dark, surprising and horrifying as it blends reality, history and fantasy to leave the reader's jaw on the floor. Well done!

Follows a prisoner in one of Stalin's work camps in the frozen wilderness. After making an escape, they struggle against the elements and the tension of hunger and desperation. A fairly short read, it's meant to preserve a sense of ambiguity as to whether its horror includes the paranormal or purely psychological.

1.0 out of 5 stars Terribly made (Do not but)

Extremely disappointed! Seems like a great story and artwork but as soon as I opened the book and start turning the pages they are falling out one by one. So poorly made, it’s barley held together at all. Such a shame for what would of been a wonderful book.

Edit: Just finished the book, almost every page fell out, can’t explain how disappointed I am as it was a fantastic story and very well illustrated. I wish I could recommend this to everyone but the quality of the product itself is so bad that unfortunately I can’t.
