Cullen grew up in rural North Carolina, but now lives in the St. Louis area with his wife Cindy and his son Jackson. His noir/horror comic (and first collaboration with Brian Hurtt), The Damned, was published in 2007 by Oni Press. The follow-up, The Damned: Prodigal Sons, was released in 2008. In addition to The Sixth Gun, his current projects include Crooked Hills, a middle reader horror prose series from Evileye Books; The Tooth, an original graphic novel from Oni Press; and various work for Marvel and DC. Somewhere along the way, Cullen founded Undaunted Press and edited the critically acclaimed small press horror magazine, Whispers from the Shattered Forum.

All writers must pay their dues, and Cullen has worked various odd jobs, including Alien Autopsy Specialist, Rodeo Clown, Professional Wrestler Manager, and Sasquatch Wrangler.

And, yes, he has fought for his life against mountain lions and he did perform on stage as the World's Youngest Hypnotist. Buy him a drink sometime, and he'll tell you all about it.

So, reading this graphic novel right after reading To Sleep in a Sea of Stars by Christopher Paoilini was probably not the best idea. I didn't realize how similar the "living planet" would be to some of the events in Paolini's book. Now, that's not a bad thing at all. It just gave me some very visceral artwork to think about for when I re-read Paolini's book!

The story itself is a great work of horror, though. The basic premise is there's a rogue planet that obviously holds an alien race in thrall and demands regular sacrifices to it. These sacrifices then become embedded in the planet in horrific ways. When a team of human salvagers land on the planet they get way more than the salvage they sought.

This graphic novel is full of colorful and vivid artwork that did a great job in visualizing the horrors represented by the story. It's great for anyone looking for a sci-fi horror story that's for sure. It's got aliens, strange planets, and a crew of human scavengers who get stuck in the middle of it all. I will say, though, anyone who is sensitive to depictions of graphic violence may not be comfortable reading this graphic novel.

In fact, one of the opening scenes involves the sacrifice of an alien child by its own parent, and there are some gruesome images of blood, gore, body horror, and violence throughout. So, be aware of that much before picking this up.

The ship Cortes finds the planet known as theLonely Orphan. The crew are delighted as there is a treasure on this planet.. The crew is horrified by the planet’s inhabitants or are they. Are they part of the planet? They must travel over a difficult and treacherous landscape. Many inhabitants are more dangerous than the crew believed at first. Their experiences on the planet must make them make an important decision. Do they want to live or not?

The author has written a fearful science fiction/horror graphic novel. It is written to make the reader feel the terror of being on the planet. The illustrator has made the illustrations perfect as to show the nightmarish inhabitants on the planet. I loved the story and the illustrations colored so brightly. I was glad to read it as one volume rather than waiting for each separate issue.

A team of salvagers follow a distress signal to a rogue planet hoping to find a nice pay day. Instead they find the nightmarish bodies of astronauts who came before them. They rush to get off the planet, fearing that they will never make it off.

This story has a great mix of horror and sci-fi. The artwork is wonderful and helps add to the creepy vibe of a world full of nightmares. Sometimes all the creepy details in the art made it hard to look away. It doesn't take long to get into the action and the fast pacing kept the story moving right along. However it moves right along so quickly I never got a chance to connect to the characters or care about what happens to them. It left me wanting more character development.

Starts out straightforward love craft in alien horror but gets very thought provoking towards the end. I really liked it!

I honestly don't have a ton to say about this work. I enjoyed how dark it was and the art style was perfect for this story. The art gave me a very 90s adult swim vibe which is exactly where I could see this if it was a movie/show. I wanted to get to know the crew a little better but it was still good. I even liked the twist amd ending of the story. It was all okay good even but thats all it was... Nothing stood out to push this over the three star mark. Maybe with a bit more info this could have been an amazing five star graphic horror but sadly this was just so so....

An exciting and dark adventure, especially if you like deep-space horror. The mysteries were great and imaginative - they kept me reading and wanting to learn more. Characterization is solid and all crew members are likable. Well done.

There were places this one could've gone and been good but the characters were unlikable for one while also barely getting time to get enough personality to let us like them. The whole story was basically the played out cliched random spaceship goes in search of a distress signal and finds monsters thing. It's been done before, and better.

I wouldn't recommend it, honestly, the whole thing felt rushed and I just didn't enjoy this much at all.

Maybe if it was more than one volume the story could be decent but it doesn't seem to be so it's all in all a missed opportunity. The stars are mostly for the monster design, which was the best part of the whole book.

Thanks to NetGalley for letting me read this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Salvage vessel Cortés locks onto a mysterious signal and decides to investigate. What they find on this strange planet is sci fi horror fabulous. Picture A Nightmare on Elm Street crossed with a mystical alien race on an abandoned planet far far away. With wicked good illustrations, monsters, aliens, alien zombies... "nightmares are not indigenous here." Native planetary crystals are amping the psychic abilities of a dreamer stuck in hyper sleep which create nightmare after nightmare on planet. Salvation only occurs with the death of that dreamer. The ending was perfect. I absolutely enjoyed every page.

Thank you for allowing me to review it early.
