Sandman Vol. 1: Preludes & Nocturnes - 30th Anniversary Edition (The Sandman) Kindle & comiXology

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 7,279 ratings

Neil Gaiman's seminal series, THE SANDMAN, celebrates its 30th anniversary with an all-new edition of THE SANDMAN VOL. 1: PRELUDES & NOCTURNES!

New York Times best-selling author Neil Gaiman's transcendent series THE SANDMAN is often hailed as the definitive Vertigo title and one of the finest achievements in graphic storytelling. Gaiman created an unforgettable tale of the forces that exist beyond life and death by weaving ancient mythology, folklore and fairy tales with his own distinct narrative vision.

In PRELUDES & NOCTURNES, an occultist attempting to capture Death to bargain for eternal life traps her younger brother Dream instead. After his 70 year imprisonment and eventual escape, Dream, also known as Morpheus, goes on a quest for his lost objects of power. On his arduous journey Morpheus encounters Lucifer, John Constantine, and an all-powerful madman.

This book also includes the story "The Sound of Her Wings," which introduces us to the pragmatic and perky goth girl Death.

 Collects THE SANDMAN #1-8.

His other books include Anansi Boys, Neverwhere, American Gods, and Stardust, (winner of the American Library Association's Alex Award as one of 2000's top novels for young adults) as well as the short story collections M Is for Magic and Smoke and Mirrors. He is also the author of The Wolves in the Walls and The Day I Traded My Dad for Two Goldfish, both written for children. Sam Kieth was born in 1963 and started his professional career when he was seventeen. Later on he sold some work to DC Comics and Marvel, where he illustrated Wolverine. In 1987 Kieth drew the first five issues of Neil Gaiman's The Sandman and went on to create his own comic series called The Maxx, which was published by Image comics from 1993 until 1998. The success of the series spawned an award-winning cartoon on MTV, trading cards, a toy, and even some statues. This work is currently in print as graphic novels from DC's WildStorm imprint. Keith's recent work includes Wolverine/Hulk for Marvel Comics and Batman: Secrets and Scratch for DC Comics. He has also created several other creator-owned properties that have been published by WildStorm including Epicurus The Sage and Zero Girl.

There are a few reviews stating their copy of this graphic novel was delivered in poor condition. I was worried mine would be too, but am happy to say it is actually in great condition. No creases, rips, or bends and the pages are smooth & colorful. Haven't read it yet, but I will today. Can't wait as I am a huge Neil Gaiman fan :)

It was hard to choose tags for this book... It's a weird ride but once you start, you are hooked.

I avoided the Sandman comics for a long time because...? I was curious, but maybe I was afraid to take the leap. But I'm on a Neil Gaiman kick right now, so I decided to take the plunge and bought the 30th anniversary edition from amongst many options. I wanted to see what the fuss was about, why it's considered to be such a classic. Now I know.

I had no idea what this was going to be when I started reading. It begins with a cult. The leader is trying to trap Death so he can achieve immortality. (No death equals eternal life!) But he catches Death's little brother instead. And while the Lord of Dreams, the Sandman, Morpheus is in captivity, three precious artifacts are stolen: his dream dust, his mask, and a ruby containing parts of himself. Volume 1 of the trade paperback series shows what happens to us all without the Sandman, and follows Morpheus along on his journey to reclaim his possessions.

At times the story was horrifying, and sometimes it was really trippy. Morpheus is on earth, he visits hell, and he takes us to his dream realm. I enjoyed the eclectic story and characters, though Morpheus himself was by far my favorite. The art was a feast for the eyes. I can't wait to see where else the series takes me.

Back in the 90s, my brother was a huge fan of The Sandman. If he liked it, I figured I would hate it. So I waited many years to revisit the stories. Now that he’s gone, reading these reminds me a lot of him and the things he enjoyed, but it doesn’t surprise me at all that I found value in these stories as well. We didn’t have the same taste, but if I’d read these when he was alive, I think we would have found common ground. Neil Gaiman is a genius and though the tone may change from issue to issue, you can definitely see him working out the universe of the Sandman and finally nailing it. I can’t wait to watch the show and see how Gaiman interprets the Lord of Dreams for a new world.

Preludes & Nocturnes

Confession time I have never read this amazing series until just now. I have heard about it for years but my experience with graphic novels tends more toward superheroes.
I am so glad I finally wised up and opened this first in The Sandman universe.
It is Morpheus who takes center stage the Dream Lord who has been captured by mortals and held for years as they demand power from him.
After escaping and of course bringing revenge on the guilty he must find his power sources that were lost.
First up his pouch of sand. This leads him to John Constantine's society.
Next, he must go into hell to face Lucifer to retrieve his helmet.
Finally, he must obtain his ruby that contains so much of his power within it.
The journey is a warrior's journey to find his power again.
I think my favorite part was his meeting his big sister Death at the end. She is an incredible character that I can't wait to see more of.
I have already started ordering the subsequent graphic novels. I can't wait to continue my journey into Neil Gaiman's amazing world.

I had no idea this was a graphic novel when I picked it up on Kindle. I grabbed it because it was a Neil Gaiman book, who I read last year and really enjoyed.

As far as graphic novels go, and I'll admit that I'm not expert, this was very well done. I really liked the premise – trying to capture Death, but catching Dream instead. The characters were interesting and there was plenty of good action.

Even though I'm a Gaiman fan, I'm not really a graphic novel fan. But it would be unfair of me to compare this to novels, so I'm rating it solely against other graphic novels that I've read.

Everything from the storyline to the art work is absolutely amazing in this series. The Netflix show recently came out and it as well hold true to the comic. It takes a few creative liberties from the comic but both are still quite amazing.
The first Volume focuses mainly on Dream’s capture and the retrieval of his magical items that have fallen into the wrong hands. It’s going to be a battle to get his items back and re create his dream world, but if anyone is able to accomplish such a test is is the Lord of dreams.

Truly Gaiman’s style. Think you know about myth? Think again. If you’re not looking up references to obscure gods and goddesses you’re missing some really good content and learning. If you’re not admiring and studying the art for small references you’re missing something. To be read and enjoyed over and over again!

I loved everything about this first volume of The Sandman. I have no previous experience with The Sandman, but saw an advertisement for the show and having read and watched Good Omens, thought I would give this comic a chance. I’m not stranger to comics and while I am normally much more interested in Marvel Comics, I found The Sandman extremely captivating and unique. I’m looking forward to teaching my children how to play The Oldest Game and getting to know more about Dream and his story via the next volumes.

A great start to a wonderful series. After his 70-year imprisonment, Dream of the Endless returns to find his realm in shambles and his immortal instruments stolen. He embarks on a quest to retrieve them, encountering many fascinating characters as John Constantine, Lucifer Morningstar, and Doctor Destiny. Neil Gaiman, known for creating the worlds of American Gods, Stardust, and Coraline, gifts us with a mesmerizing tale of dreams and nightmares as the God of the Sleeping World journeys to find what is his…and finds himself along the way.

But I really enjoyed this one! I loved Morpheus (or Dream, or whatever else you want to call him), and I also enjoyed John Constantine. It was totally crazy but very entertaining, and the artwork was great to look at. I think I’ll definitely be continuing with the series.
