“Among the few comics writers that critics point to as having transcended the genre and created something new and vital.” —The San Francisco Examiner
“If The Sandman isn’t the greatest comic of the century, it is good enough to demand to be judged by those standards.” —The Independent

This volume is less interesting than those previous I read. I find this read on the same level as volume 3: Dream Country. This volume does not scatter short stories throughout the narrative, but does show the same vibe. You don’t see Dream (Morpheus) much in this volume, but there is always a sense within the reader to always keep him in the background. The Dream setting and how it interplays with reality accounts for Dream’s responsibility to captivate the reader into his world. What I always love about this series is it defies many boundaries that many comic books haven’t dared venture. Let’s give a round of applause for Keith, Gaiman, and the rest of the DC team for creating a masterpiece.

I'll be devouring the rest of this whole collection soon, believe me, and I recommend The Sandman as a whole to anyone wanting to give graphic novels a try.
In a tale where imagination and dreams collide, it is not unusual that things seem to happen by pure chance, but Gaiman has created a close examination of identity, femininity and empowerment. When Lord Morpheus appears, the story comes under his control and the Endless are unforgiving of those who seek to alter their realms.
It is interesting to see how far and how little society has progressed in its attitudes towards women - especially transgender women and it is also good to see Morpheus take something of a back seat in this female led storyline.
