I can find nothing wrong with this book. What a superb piece of art! I've been disgusted with the state of Star Trek for awhile. But this book was a return to everything I fell in love with as a kid; long before I ever heard the words Kelvin timeline. It makes me want to binge watch the one and only original. Everything is here that made the original so wonderful, especially grumpy Doctor McCoy and his banter with Spock. I can even feel the Kirk-Spock-McCoy dynamic thru out the story underlying everything. The art work is just plain beautiful. I prefer Norman Rockwell type art. Can't stand over exaggerated stuff. And every panel is sheer delight. I mean, Captain Kirk looks like William Shatner.Think I'll go play with my original Star Trek Mego dolls while I await issue #2.

*** WARNING: POSSIBLE SPOILERS AHEAD***

Reading the old, Gold Key Star Trek comics, and then the John Byrne manipulated photo comics got me interested in seeing what the new Trek comics looked like. As I've been impressed with Amazon's comic-reading app on my phone, I decided to buy this first issue of "Year Five".

The book starts off quite ominously with Captain James T. Kirk sitting in his command chair on the bridge of the U.S.S. Enterprise, in deep shadow and with no other crew members around, and he's narrating his Captain's Log which suggests that this is the final log entry to go with the final, deadly mission of the ship. A figure approaches, with a weapon to Kirk's head, asking if Kirk is 'ready.'

We then fall into a flashback in which the Enterprise receives a distress call from Tholians and a landing party goes to render assistance.

And, after a little bit of action, we are 'to be continued...'.

This very brief beginning of a story is a little frustrating and is one of the reasons that waiting for a graphic novel to put the entire story together in one book is worth the wait.

I found the story interesting, and I'd like to read the rest of it, though the doom of the opening pages is not as ominous as it intends to be if we are to believe this is part of actual Star Trek universe since we know Kirk and crew survive long enough to make a few movies.

The artwork is quite good (though I would have to admit to a bias for the Star Trek art by Gordon Purcell in the 1980-90's) with coloring that is bold and striking (just look at that cover!).

Looking for a good book? Star Trek: Year Five #1 is well scripted and very nicely drawn comic, but it might be better to just wait for the complete story in a graphic novel format.

Beautiful artwork, and it’s great to see the original series getting some love, so I was excited for this. But it starts out with Spock saying, basically, “We have 5 minutes to do X”, and then proceeding to give pages worth of exposition, which....makes no sense, given their limited time to do what they have to do. If the clock is ticking, it would be pretty...(ahem)...illogical for Spock to be spending valuable time telling the captain and bridge crew what they already know, for the purpose of filling in the reader (who could be informed via non-dialog text, which is a benefit of this being a book and not a movie or TV episode).

After all the preachy, commie BS that Star Trek media has belched out over the years it is refreshing to read so straight up adventure and sci-fi. I really enjoyed the first issue and plan to buy the series. This is what Star Trek is supposed to be!

I didn't buy this through Amazon but I got this issue from my local comic book store.
It's a great read! You actually feel like you're watching an episode.
The only bad thing is that it leaves you hanging with a " to be continued."

3.0 out of 5 stars Story is well balanced and interesting enough not to need a look at another awesome comic

As one feels an ad ( too long ) for another comic is nice but not needed an extra story would have been better
