When I think of Marvel's Star Wars run, two types of stories pop into my head: Some are zany and goofy but still tug at your nostalgic heart strings and take you on an enthralling, if corny, adventure. Others are the kind of well-thought-out and plot-developing tales that could easily fit into the Star Wars material that is being produced today. This volume includes issues of the comic that, in my opinion, shifted the focus of the series from the former to the latter. These stories perfectly capture the feel of the Original Trilogy and are sometimes, again in my opinion, profoundly deep. However, they still possess the humor and innocence that permeated the first issues of the comic's run and will forever be a part of Star Wars. In other words, this book contains some great, great stories.

For those fans of the Saga who are interested in what specific stories they'll be getting, here is a brief overview: The book begins with Leia's journey to Mandalore, the first story in Star Wars canon to deal with that planet and its legendary inhabitants. The focus then shifts to Luke and Lando's quest to track down bounty hunters involved in the plot to kidnap Han Solo. Next, readers travel to the planet Iskalon where Imerial subjugation reveals just what the "Star Warriors" are fighting against. After a while, the story reaches the events of Return of the Jedi, with a four-issue comic adaption of the film. After this, the volume contains several adventures taking place after the final film in the Saga.

But enough about the stories, let's talk about the book itself! At nearly 600 full-color pages, it is an absolute steal at $15! My advice is that whether you are a die-hard fan of the Saga, a comic bok enthusiast, or someone looking for an entertaining way to spend several hours (or days), you should pick up this volume!

Once long ago when the first reprinted collections came out I was unable to afford the hefty price tag. I was to young to buy the original comics so I was disappointed when I couldn't read these stories.

Now finally I can read these stories that have had a few characters added into recent novels. This is a great collection with color and is fun to read. I like to see how the stories of old compare with the new EU and Dark horse stories that seem to be cranked out these days.

A great treat for someone who missed the time era these were printed in and when they reprinted them around the late 90's was to broke to afford the hefty price.

Now with kids of my own and money still as tight the 20 dollar price range isn't so bad. Since the Eu has started adding characters into their novels from these issues it is fun to read and actually see how they first came to be in a galaxy far far away. A great collection for new and old alike! This collection has 68-85 with Return of the Jedi adaptation included. Enjoy!

What a great collection. As a child my first comic was the 4-part adaptation of Return of the Jedi, I can't remember how many times I read that story it was the best combination, comics and Star Wars. I have since my childhood not been able to find that book. This volume, however, has in it that amazing adaptation. It is still as good as I remember from when I was a kid.

Great book!!

The art is detailed and the color is very good. I feel like these Marvel comics have a better quality than prior ones.

Luke brandishes his lightsaber a bit too often, in my opinion, though.
It's spectacular too - there are only TWO mentions of an event occurring in a past issue, and they were different, non-recursive issues.

As other reviewers have stated, these "A Long Time Ago" omnibuses are a great value, and are probably the best way to read the original Marvel Star Wars comics, published in 1977-1986. For each of the 107 monthly issues and three King-Sized Annuals, Dark Horse has painstakingly recreated the colors of the original Marvel comics as closely as possible.

However, with Marvel's 4-issue Return of the Jedi series, Dark Horse appears to have cheated. Rather than printing the original Marvel color design by Christie Scheele and Bob Sharen, they have instead copied the pages directly from Dark Horse's recolored version, as it appears in the "Return of the Jedi Special Edition" graphic novel. While I don't mind the darker, grittier, more realistic colors of Dark Horse colorists Cary Porter and Perry McNamee in the graphic novel, I actually prefer the bright, cheerful, watercolor-like pastels of the original Marvel comics, including a nice use of shading not evident in the Dark Horse version. A minor complaint perhaps, but the Dark Horse version is already available as a separate graphic novel, and also in another omnibus (The Complete Saga: Episodes I-VI). This omnibus is supposed to duplicate the original Marvel comics, and I can't help being a little disappointed with Dark Horse's shortcut.

Here is the breakdown of the five volumes of this series:
Volume 1: issues #1-#27 (July 1977-September 1979)
Volume 2: issues #28-#49 (October 1979-July 1981) and King-Size Annual #1 (1979)
Volume 3: issues #50-#67 (August 1981-January 1983) and King-Size Annual #2 (1982)
Volume 4: issues #68-#85 (February 1983-July 1984), King-Size Annual #3 (1983) and Return of the Jedi #1-#4 (October 1983-January 1984)
Volume 5: issues #86-#107 (August 1984-September 1986) [the series became bi-monthly beginning with issue #103, January 1986]

there are five volumes to this series. Collecting all of the stories from the Marvel era. Very grand and entertaining, while the stories stray from established canon at times, that doesn't mean the stories aren't great. You'll find yourself wanting to read them all, good thing there are five volumes to help you pace yourself lol.
