Long time fan of Mike Grell’s work and it’s cool to have this lesser known work of his collected in one affordable edition.

Fun
Mike Grell is one of the best artists and writers ever. His work on this and other books is truly legendary.

I'm going to keep it simple. Fan favorite Mike Grell created an fantastic character / series in 1983 -Torin Mac Quillam , STARSLAYER. A mix of historical action-adventure that becomes an dystopian , star spanning story . The problem here isn't the story but this collection. I owned the original comics published by Pacific Comics in the 80's being a fan of Grell's artwork , I don't recall it being this muddled , sketchy, faded & dark. Not sure if it's how the original was copied to manufacture this book or simply my memory of the comic is bad. It was great to reread a story I loved but the artwork made this so less a joy. As far as an"Director's Cut" goes it's weak there's things I recall that aren't here and the "extras" 7 sketches (BEAUTIFUL ) and an artist profile / photo that do little to justify the cost of this. The sketches illustrate Grell's work as it should appear clean, crisp lines-tight images-highly detailed. If Darkhorse wants to sell reprints try should try to put out better quality reproductions . And lets have more than the first 8 issues and real extras.Otherwise save your money unless you're a collector .

This is just fun. Space adventure with a guy in a chain mail loin cloth using a sword to fight aliens. Escapist adventure that's not heavy yet not dumb. Only problem is, this is the worst reprinting I've seen in a long time. The book end first and last issues are OK, but the rest look like the pages were soaked in water then inked with a Sharpie. So muddy, ruins the art page after page. Did they just scan pages from printed copies of the original comics? It's worse on the smaller panels where details are completely lost. Almost an insult to Grell. The original fun and excitement still shine through, some, but this is a muddy mess.

Mike Grell....where to begin???? I was a little familiar with his Legion of Super-heroes work, and I heard of Warlord, but I was hooked by his work on Green Arrow: The Longbow Hunters. Wow...Mr. Grell is just awesome. No other way to put it. This book showed up in my Amazon recommendations, and I saw that it was one of his earlier independent comics works, so I preordered it. This book was way ahead of its time. Very interesting characters. Bad ass warriors, sexy women, outer space, barbarians... Go buy this book. I hope the rest of the series gets collected.

I remember first stumbling upon this comic during its initial printing by PC Comics, and I really liked the character and ship designs, as well as the storyline. So, this collection was a long time coming for this fan of that initial run.

When I got it, what struck me was just how muddy the reproduction was, it in no wise resembled what I remembered. So, I went and dug up my copies of the initial PC run. What I noted was that there was a change of colorist between the two editions. In the PC run, Steve Oliff employed a more muted palate which far better served Mike Grell's artwork, allowing the reader to pick out the fine details. While In the reprint a far more vibrant palate was used which overwhelmed the line work leaving a rather muddy result.

(sigh)

Needless to state, I was disappointed with this result.

Now, to the collection's credit is that it does include a prolog (breakouts by Mike Grell, but finished by other artists) and an epilog (not illustrated by Mike Grell), which were not part of the original run, as well as prints from the portfolio Mike Grell had assembled for Starslayer, the Journals of the Jolly Roger. I just wish that Steve Oliff had colored the entire run, and that Mike Grell had fully illustrated the prolog and epilog, just to make it complete work.

Still, given that I had been waiting for years for a Starslayer collection, this is will have to do.

I love having these comics back in my life again. I used to have most of these comics when I was a kid. Mike Grell is one of my favorite illustrators, and he tells a great story, too. This book tells the full story of the Starslayer. This is a must have for fans of 80's comics, fans of sci-fi adventure, and fans of Grell's beautiful artwork.

The art / reproduction in this is a mess - I agree with many of the comments about that. For me, it is worse than that because I was expecting the Starslayer Pacific Comics / First Comics issues to be collected i.e Starslayer 1-8 Director's cut does not match the Starslayer 1-8 that I have. It looks as if there was another series based on the original but a 'director's cut'. Loved the artwork in the original series, certainly not in this new variation of it.

I would love to see a proper collection of this series of Starslayer (PC / First) - an omnibus edition of that would be amazing. This sadly is not that even though it is released by the normally superb Dark Horse

2.0 out of 5 stars Völlig indiskutabler Nachdruck!
Reviewed in Germany on March 2, 2020
