In the first story, Orson and Beth and Nina are on the run with suitcases full of money and cocaine that clearly do not belong to them. They decide to hide in a small town called Seaside (which is hundreds of miles from the sea but the mayor is optimistic that California will eventually fall into the ocean). Remaining inconspicuous is a problem, given Beth's propensity to fight with the local trailer trash. But the story is really about the differences between the male and female emotional states when it comes to love and sex. Or maybe just sex.
The second story introduces a Seaside loser named Nick who can't pay his bills, can't get laid, and doesn't get any respect until he ... sort of ... develops an image of heroism. This is a nice piece of storytelling that borders on brilliance.
The third story features a young girl named Amy who is trying to escape from the people who want to kill her when she has a run-in with murderous clowns. Again, freaking brilliant. Number four, less brilliant but still awesome, goes back to Beth and Nina, revealing a few hours of the lonely lives they've made for themselves.
Story 5 brings it all together at the Seaside fair. Amy escapes from the law with the help of a parrot while a bunch of losers make unsuccessful attempts to get laid -- unsuccessful until serious drugs are employed. Clowns make a return appearance but the kill-crazy sheriff and a five-legged cow are highlights. Amy writes story 6, which features a lot of "the end" closings because the only way to find a happy ending in life is to arbitrarily declare that you have reached "the end" of your story whenever something good happens.
The climax comes in story 7. All the storylines tie together, background characters take on new importance, and the resolution is ... well, really violent. But in a smart way.
This series showcases graphic noir at its best. David Lapham is practically the reincarnation of Will Eisner. The black-and-white art is perfect for the stories that are told. Did I mention that it's brilliant?
The town of Seaside has a boardwalk, but no waterfront. They live in the hopes of a big California earthquake that will bring them the beach and make their property valuable. It's a town in the middle of nowhere populated by nobodys. This makes it the perfect town for Orson, Beth and Nina to hide from the mob in. They've got a suitcase full of drugs, or they did until Nina started helping herself. They have a nosy neighbor kid who is spying through the holes in their floor. They try to hide out and not go stir crazy. Can they stay below the radar, especially with Nina freaking out?
Seaside also has a big talking loser named Nick. He talks a good game, but he's not as lucky with the ladies as he lets on. He might get a chance at something if Beth and Nina have anything to say. He might be the distraction they need, but what goes up does come down, or does it?
It's all black and white art, and I like Lapham's style. The book is a series of stories that intertwine and weave around each other. Amy Racecar, the psychopath from the first volume, makes an appearance. The situations and violence are quirky and filled with dark humor. The characters are strange and the stuff of garishly bad dreams. I enjoyed the heck out of the first volume and this one too.
I received a review copy of this graphic novel from Diamond Book Distributors, Image Comics, and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this very good graphic novel.

Einziger Kritikpunkt: Man hätte die Kindle-Version anders Beschneiden sollen. So muss man hier und da zoomen, um lesen zu können.
