Still hoping New 52 Superman returns, but Tomasi is doing an amazing job with this title!
After the battles of the past few issues with Eradicator and Doomsday, Superman gets to catch his breath. And what better way to do that than a day at the fair? While the tug of being a hero can be strong, this is a day that his family needs. It's a story of family and getting the priorities right, at least for now. Can Superman have a day at peace or will duty call?
I really liked this story. The look in Jon's eyes as he looks at his dad are really great. It could have been a fluff story, but instead, at least for me, it comes across as a strong family story. It's a good way to finish the first story arc of this series and set things up going forward.
I received a review copy of this issue from DC Entertainment and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this comic book.
*Great jumping on point if you've never picked up a Superman comic. A whole new story arc starts here.*
Superman #7 "Our Town"
Writer: Peter Tomasi/Patrick Gleason
Artist: Jorge Jimenez
Plot: Not that the Eradicator has been eradicated, Clark Smith aka Superman and his family move on with their lives. Clark even makes it effort to become part of the Hamilton County community by taking Jonathan and Lois to the local county fair. Clark has even made a vow to Lois that he will not don the Superman costume and not fight crime while at the fair. Meanwhile, there is a group of men planning a robbery in the fair...
There wasn't much action in this issue, so for me to enjoy it THIS much was really surprising. This was a really fun issue as the "Smiths" spend a night on the town. Watching Clark, Lois, and Jonathan interact with each and the community was hilarious and sweet as each panel was masterfully illustrated by Jimenez.
Jimenez' art style is both vibrant and emotive, and he captures the Smiths perfectly with mannerisms and facial expressions. In fact I don't think I've ever read a comic with SO MANY facial expressions before. Alot of care was taken to make sure that Smiths felt authentically like a family unit, while making the circumstances surrounding them "unespecially" fun. You're just spending a night with them in the county fair, but you won't want to put the book down. Highly recommended!
