About the Author

Peter J. Tomasi is a New York Times best-selling author known for his current work on Superman and previous projects Batman and Robin, Superman/Wonder Woman, Batman - Detective Comics, and Batman Arkham Knight, along with other commercially successful books including Green Lantern Corps, Brightest Day, Emerald Warriors, and Nightwing. Over the course of his career with DC Comics—more than two decades of hit books—Peter served as a group editor ushering in new eras for Batman, Green Lantern, and JSA along with special projects like Kingdom Come. Peter also is the author of the creator owned books Light Brigade (Dark Horse) with artist Peter Snejbjerg, The Mighty (Dark Horse) with Keith Champagne and artists Peter Snejbjerg and Chris Samnee, and the critically acclaimed horror/drama series House of Penance (Dark Horse) with artist Ian Bertram.

Patrick Gleason loves to create fantastic characters and worlds. His focus on character development and powerful storytelling can be seen in DC’s Batman and Robin, Green Lantern Corps, Aquaman, JLA, Hawkman, and JSA. His ground-laying work alongside Geoff Johns and Dave Gibbons on the miniseries Green Lantern Corps: Recharge made way for the acclaimed ongoing series. The Sinestro Corps War followed, and then the explosive Blackest Night with Peter J. Tomasi. As part of the DC Comics New 52, Patrick lent his artistic vision to the Dynamic Duo of Batman and Robin. Patrick is currently writing and penciling Robin: Son of Batman.

Top reviews from the United States

As far as I’m concerned, Superman is the best mainstream comic in the new Rebirth and I can’t recall a time when Superman has been written and drawn this well. In fact, Superman is kicking butt in both Superman AND Action Comics. I am just enjoying the heck out of the Superman stories but that doesn’t mean they’re perfect. Superman Book 2 leads off Superman Annual 1 which is just one long encounter between Superman and Swamp Thing. This one was a bit of a head scratcher for me but the art by Jorge Jimenez is GORGEOUS.

The next story arc is a three-parter that is kind of a follow up to Grant Morrison’s Multiversity. I adored Multiversity but this story arc is really not that good. It felt empty and pointless which is a shame because I’d been hoping for a continuation of the ideas Morrison developed. There is a single-issue Jon Kent story called Dark Harvest which is a cool little horror story. Next is a two-parter called Superman Reborn that is part of the mysterious Clark Kent saga, which was already resolved in Action Comics: The Rebirth Book 2. There is a jump between the first part and the second part and the resolution is super abrupt in this book so if you haven’t read Action Comics Book 2 it won’t make much sense. You can buy Superman Reborn and get the whole story arc in chronological order but then you’d be double dipping and nah. That’s the problem with having a story arc that spans multiple series.

Next, we have the six-part Black Dawn which was pretty cool. It started off with some strange happenings in the small town of Hamilton and turns into a huge battle with one of Superman’s most powerful foes. If you look through my reviews I’ve been very critical of a lot of stuff DC has been putting out lately but Superman is currently operating on all cylinders. I love having Superman and his family living in Hamilton while he teaches his son the ropes. I wouldn’t claim that the writing is flawless but overall this is really good stuff. My one concern is that it seems a little weird that Hamilton keeps getting these cosmic level threats that require a Superman to handle. In the huge city of Metropolis we can suspend disbelief but in Hamilton? I’m fine with the stories where Superman and Jon are just doing small town things although I’m sure this will eventually wear thin. I almost think they should have kept the New 52 Superman for the big threats while the classic Superman operated in semi-retirement with his family. Either way I’m extremely pleased to be at a point where I eagerly anticipate the release of the next Superman Deluxe Edition because I can’t remember ever feeling such excitement for my favorite super hero.

These DC Rebirth Deluxe hardcovers are as good as a comics hardcover gets.
Beautiful printed wraparound covers under the dust jacket, and nearly perfect binding with almost no gutter loss but the smallest amount.
And then there’s the actual contents which are fantastic.
Supermans rebirth comics were a brilliant road to the Bendis works.
