Superman/Wonder Woman (2013-2016) Vol. 5: A Savage End Kindle & comiXology

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 107 ratings

WHO LIVES, WHO DIES …

A “power couple” no more, Superman and Wonder Woman need each other more than ever if they’re to defeat the immortal despot Vandal Savage. By stealing the Man of Steel’s powers, Savage has realized his master plan to draw back to Earth the comet that gave him his power eons ago. And this time, he’s confident it will grant him unspeakable might.

In his weakened state, Superman is a near-certain casualty at the hands of Savage and the super-powered genetic offspring that kill in his name. Diana appeals to the Olympian gods to heal him, knowing that they will first put his spiritual form through an emotionally grueling test to determine his worthiness. Should the God of War’s desperate gamble pay off, she and Superman must still contend with the immortal madman and his progeny. Will that epic battle move the estranged lovers to reaffirm their feelings for one another…or must one final tragedy bring them back into each other’s arms?

Critically acclaimed writer Peter J. Tomasi (SUPERMAN) and artists Doug Mahnke (JUSTICE LEAGUE), Cliff Richards (LOBO), Ed Benes (RED LANTERNS) and Jorge Jimenez (EARTH 2: SOCIETY) chronicle what appear to be the final days of the world’s most powerful couple in SUPERMAN/WONDER WOMAN VOL. 5, collecting issues #25-29 and collected edition exclusive SUPERMAN/WONDER WOMAN #30-31.

I will miss this Superman and Wonder Woman. I have been reading Superman off and on since I was a kid in the 70s'. I never bought the Lois Lane relationship, I always thought that it should have been Wonder Woman. DC should have let this relationship play out further. That Lois Lane thing is so played out. Too bad.

The final book in the Superman/Wonder Woman series is a bit of a letdown not due to the quality of the stories within per say but due to the fact that pretty much everything in this volume can be found elsewhere for the most part. After the major cliffhanger of the previous volume (Clark admitting that he's not sure if he wants to stay with Diana anymore) the super-powered couple are struggling to figure out their relationship amidst two new major threats: the all out assault of Vandal Savage on the Earth and the appearance of a fiery Superman doppleganger who seems to have all of Clark's memories. The issue here is that both of these stories are part of two much larger crossover events. The former includes bits and pieces of the overall Savage Dawn event (wherein we find out that it was Vandal Savage sapping Supes' powers) and the latter features some of the material found in The Final Days of Superman (where Supes learns that he is dying and there is no cure).

First, this volume is hard to read for anyone who hasn't already read the two crossover events in their entirety as the crossover issues here are bits and pieces of the much larger overall narrative. Second, as a fitting and emotional end to this series this volume falls flat on its face a bit. The major revelation in Final Days of Superman is that Clark puts distance between him and Diana only due to the revelation that he was dying not because he actually wanted to back out of the relationship. Furthermore he admits that he had been planning on asking her to marry him prior to the reveal of his condition. The pair reconcile and share a heartwarming goodbye before the New 52 Supes passes away. The fractured nature of this book however doesn't leave you with that same sentiment. We do get to see the bits from the Final Days arc where the pair reconcile, but the book ends with a two part story wherein Diana finally learns the truth of Clark's condition and goes to confront him... which happens before Final Days of Superman not after. The volume attempts to explain this but the result is that the finale of this volume is the pair being stand offish and avoiding each other, not reconciling. Also, the book opens with the only piece that is unique to this specific volume: an annual that shows a look back at the pair's whole relationship from various points of their time together. We see at the end that Clark is debating asking Diana to marry him only to lament that he'd wanted to for so long before the various DC events kept getting in the way. The annual ends with him wondering if now the time has truly passed him by. This makes sense later as this must be the moment when Clark (after finding out he's dying) tries to push Diana away, but reading the annual alone merely makes it look like the pair is going to break up.

Overall the fractured state of this collection and the fact that everything aside from the opening annual can be found in the much more solid Savage Dawn and amazing Final Days of Superman books makes this one a bit superfluous. I could have appreciated the book if it served as a bittersweet in memoriam for this often underrated superhero couple but the manner in which it is put together seems to highlight the pair's relationship drama instead of their heartbreaking reunion from Final Days. Again the fact that the publishers put the whole Wonder Woman-focused mini arc at the end where she continually stresses about why Clark is avoiding her ends the book on a sour note. Frankly, I loved this series when it played off the idea of Supes and W.W. drawing strength from each other but a few too many books in the series played up cheap relationship drama instead. All in all, you are better off just reading Savage Dawn and then Final Days of Superman rather than wasting your time here.
