Swamp Thing: Protector of the Green (Swamp Thing (2011-2015)) Kindle & comiXology

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 30 ratings

The legendary Swamp Thing has resurfaced for a new age just as a new force threatens to rot away all life on Earth! Since the dawn of time, the planet's safety has depended on maintaining a balance of three great powers: the Green, the force that unites all plant life; the Red, the force that unites all animal life; and the Rot, the force of death. The Rot's own avatar is growing stronger, and servants of decay gain more territory every day. If Alec Holland doesn't return to his duties as protector of the Green soon, there might not be anything left to protect!

I write comic books! Growing up, I always wanted to write comics, but I ended up trying my hand at fiction first. I got my MFA from Columbia University, published a book of short stories with The Dial Press in 2006 called Voodoo Heart, then finally broke into comics in 2009 and haven't looked back since. I've worked extensively for DC Comics, writing such titles as Batman, Detective Comics, Justice League, the comic event books DC Dark Knights Metal and Death Metal, and Swamp Thing, among others. I've also created a number of series with some great co-creators and partners -- books like We Have Demons, Clear, Night of the Ghoul, Nocterra, American Vampire, Wytches, the Wake, AD: After Death, and more... I live in NY with my wife, Jeanie and our three boys. I am also a big fan of Elvis Presley.

Some of scott snyder's best work. Some of swamp things best moments. Honestly this is a great collection because it's all you need of new 52 swamp thing. And it's really great.

Great story, great price for as many pages that this edition contains. This is one of the best series to come out of the New 52.

I give it 2 stars not because of the quality of story telling or artwork. Even the binding was fine and was nicely sizable for the price. My complaint is the marketing (in my opinion) this was going to collect all of Snyder's issues before Charles Soule took over (who's is just as good). I suppose he only wrote up to issue 11 just before the arc he layed the foundation for was concluded. This book leaves you wide open with a cliff hanger and a incomplete story. They easily could've incorporated the last few issues to wrap everything up nicely. Even if Snyder didnt write the whole book they could've give Jeff Lemire credit since he contributed some to its conclusion. I would encourage everyone to just buy the individual volumes so its concise and you know as a reader there is more to come, versus you thinking this is a "complete collection". Once again the quality of the content is very good and is a fun story but just disappointed in its manufacturing where you are shorthanded. Hopefully this helps everyone!

Any post-Alan Moore Swamp Thing stories have the unfortunate task of having to be compared to his legendary run. Perhaps that's unfair because while Moore's run was amazing, it's not without its flaws or valid criticisms. That said, story-wise this Scott Snyder run pales in comparison. The writing here is at best, standard comic book fare. It gives the characters absolutely no personality. It's also unfortunate that it completely misses the mark when it comes to Abby's character, and feels the neet to ret-con Swampy's origin, yet again. Fortunately, though, the art is amazing (for the most part) and actually does a better job of storytelling than the dialog. I absolutely loved the art here and it's disgustingly brutal depictions of body-horror. I love how this book takes a hard horror approach to the title, and in doing so establishes its own identity. It's just too bad that the writing pales in comparison to the art and presentation.

This would have been a 5 star review had the book actually contained the issues it said it did in the description. It doesn't. It only contains issues 0 -11 of Swamp Thing from New 52.... If you want the whole thing, you have to get Swamp Thing Vol. 3: Rotworld: The Green Kingdom and then you miss out the Animal Man issues from Animal Man Vol. 3: Rotworld: The Red Kingdom.

I am kind of frustrated that the story is left where it is and that to collect the whole thing currently you have to find back issues of Trade paperbacks for Animal Man as well, not to mention you get duplicate issues in Volume 3 of both titles. Very poorly thought out.
